Thoughts the morning after heartbreak

So after a few hours of sleep I think I'm ready to talk about it, I'm very proud of the guys they played extremely hard but I'm really disappointed in Heupel, he made some really bad coaching decisions which has kind of become the normal... here's my thoughts not that they mean much but we really needed this game...we are a good football team but the rest of our schedule is tough, Bama, Florida, Miss state on the road, OU, Ark at home.... I believe we end the year 8-4....9-3 at best...had we beat UGA like we should have we would've had a shot at another playoff run, just my thoughts... I'm disappointed but also proud of how our program has totally changed under heup just wish he'd stop coaching scared in crucial moments of the game🍊🍊🍊
While I agree with you, I can't get past Gilbert missing a kick he makes 9 out of 10 times. That's like a 90% FT shooter going to the line in the waning seconds for a one-and-one and he misses the front end. Take the coaching decisions away and we had one play to win the game, and our guy didn't execute. He was so nervous I don't think 5 yards closer would have mattered.

ESPN's updated CFP rankings have us at #10, and the only other game we're projected to lose based on their probabilities is at Alabama. We can still get into the playoff as long as we finish 10-2 or 11-1.

Hope is not lost but we certainly blew a golden opportunity yesterday.

I see it opposite of most opinions on here. I figured 9-3/8-4 before the game. I didn’t give us much chance with a pick up game qb coming off a 24 interception season and the loss of all our dudes on the d-line, o-line. After they went toe to toe with UGA I think the sky is the limit. One field goal not 20 yards to the right and most of you would be demanding they go ahead and name us national champion this morning. Losing sucks and there are no moral victories but just exactly who left on the schedule is better coached or more talented than UGA?

Here’s my thoughts, we need more Blue Chips in the trenches.
The O line looks to be the best Heupel has had since he took over at UT. They played a hell of a game yesterday and I don’t believe the unit has given up a sack yet. The interior d line needs some more players, however, I think the group will get a huge boost once Hobbs and Moi return.

I can’t imagine seeing this game and not being optimistic about the rest of the season.
I'm cautiously optimistic. Really pleased with how we played overall yesterday, but also wondering if/when we're in that situation again if our guys can step up in crunch time and make the crucial plays.

They are improved but better and quicker QB decision making helps.

Agreed the debacle before the FG at the end of regulation was a back breaker IMO. I agree also that I don’t see a way we 8-1 with the schedule a head of us.

Does anybody know our blue chip ratio compared to the rest of the SEC?
I believe ours is 54%. UGA is around 80 to 90 range. Now somebody tell me again how coaching lost? Team with more talent wins in college. Did I miss something or didn’t we miss the game winning field goal at the end of regulation? Players didn’t execute when they needed to most.

I still feel a couple of bad coaching decisions cost us this game.
Too conservative post fumble recovery. But some rather stupid penalties also. Shoving a receiver in the back on a pass that had no shot, false start on a play that did not remotely require firing off the ball quickly. Maybe on coaching but everyone should have accountability.

This program lived in mediocrity for so long that it seems to have conditioned a large portion of our fan base. Even today you see a lot of fans excited we played toe to toe with Georgia and they make excuses for our roster depth.

Guys, we were a #1 team 3 years ago. We went to the college football playoff last season. We have brought in top tier recruits. It is time to change your expectations. We should have won that game yesterday. Yeah, we had some injuries and young guys playing...but so did Georgia. Heupel has to convert games like that...goes up 21-7 in front of a home crowd going crazy...gets a huge second half turnover...our fan base and team for that matter, has to expect to win those games and not just be proud of almost winning. That is, if we want to be where Georgia is.

My complaint with coaching is the way they handled the end of regulation and not having Star on the field. I think CJH got scared after the offsides that we would do it again and rushed the FG unit onto the field. Gilbert had to go from thinking a play was going to be run to set him up to rushing onto to the field and kicking from a spot he hadn’t prepared for.

My other complaint is after the GA turnover we played for a FG instead of going for the kill shot with a TD.

Bad play calling blah blah bad coaching blah blah. 38 pts v Ga. 500 yards. Qb has 5 tds?!? We haven’t had a qb get 2 in a decade it seems. Haven’t had yards like that in a decade v Ga.
This is real life. Not every play call is a good one. Ever. Seldom are there drives where a play call isn’t questioned, though q1 may have been mistake free. Hard to keep up that pace.
At home, in front of 102k, up 8, late in 4th, loud af, they have to go 75 and get a 2 pt conversion…you take that all day and on Sundays. Players have to make a stop. Coaches have to get D players aware and ready and help freshman db if necessary and put defense in position to make a stop. Didn’t happen. 1 stop. We gave up ~ a dozen 3rd and 4th down conversions? Can’t happen. Stop half of those and we get 6 more possessions.

Not sure where coaching hate is coming from, I guess after an L someone needs to be blamed. I thought Heup called an excellent game. Maybe the series after the fumble recovery coulda been a little better, but playing vs 2 high safeties…you have to be able to run the ball. And our defense held a few red zone drives to field goals. We have to feel 10x better about our boys moving forward!

My thoughts

We’re a legitimate football team, Georgia is the standard and we went toe to toe with them and should have beaten them. Heupel made some questionable decisions, sure but I’ll say that for most of the game, the man played to win. He knew what that game meant.

Got to execute when it matters and the defense is missing some dudes. You seen it late in the game. I knew when it went to OT what was about to happen.

I will not blame the refs we got some calls and there were a couple of bad calls against us but don’t feel they impacted the game.

Bottom line, 8-4 or 9-3 is probably it this year and that’s okay. There was a 15-20 year span where we would have killed to be where we are right now as a football program. This game don’t make or break the season, there’s a lot of football left to be played.
Agree with this and OP's views. Most of the PI calls were due to the fact that GA's receivers were torching our DB's and they were desperately trying to stop them. A couple of the PI calls were just dumb things by the DB, note the push in the back of a GA receiver when the ball was overthrown. And yes the PI call was cheap but there was no reason for our DB to do that.

Disappointing but not a disaster. Get Gibson and McCoy back and that should upgrade the DB's. A lot of positives from this game and a lot of negatives. Good news is most of the negatives are fixable.

I see Bama as a loss and changing my other potential loss from UF to OK. M. St and Arky will also be tough. 10-2 if D improves to 8-4 if issues remain.

My complaint on that is I thought he would kick on 3rd down before the penalty play. In that situation it gives you another opportunity should there be a bad snap. I do understand wanting to center the ball. That false start penalty in that situation is maybe one of the worst penalties I can remember.

Agree that false start was bad when the play call was just to center the ball. No blocking was required.

I agree it just felt like they had to rush after the penalty and that had to contributed to the miss.

No coaching hate from me. I do recognize JH could have been more aggressive at times IMO. It is easy for me to coach with hindsight on a message board. KS made some mistakes as well but his players made plays in the end. That last touchdown throw and catch probably had a low percentage but yet they made the play.
