This in regards to the media backlash about Jordan Beck (baseball) flipping off the GA Tech fanbase last night. I’m posting it in the football forum because the majority of beatings Tennessee has taken over the last two decades have been football related.

I don’t agree with a lot of this post, I don’t think this should be encouraged, but I kind of see where the poster is coming from here given some of the ringer we’ve had to go through as Tennessee fans for a long time now.

Interested in others’ thoughts.

I am along the same lines as you I believe, it happened in the heat of the moment at a breaking point in the game. I definitely feel this is not part of the game (the flipping of the finger) but I do love the bat flips, the taunting home run trots, the fur coat and hat. All this I personally enjoy and makes the game a little more exciting for sure and it doesn't hurt that they are fielding history making team.

I also grew up in the 80's and 90's were baseball was far from classy, you had your etiquette but if you were thrown at enough you were fighting.

in football forum speak I see this no different than a Rashaan Gaulden vs Alabama moment.

Classless, trashy, and completely expected from this fanbase. That's my thoughts.

You can "care about winning" and have some moxy without flipping people off. It's pretty stupid to suggest someone can't. I don't know who wrote this but it's hard for me to not think they are pretty stupid.

A kid (20ish?) flipped someone off during the heat of the moment. I guarantee CTV said something to him. He made a mistake, just like kids do.

There was a moment late in the game where it looked like he was chewing Gilbert's arse. Gilbert then went to Beck in the dugout. The cameras were definitely picking up on it. I feel sure it's been dealt with internally.

So unless we're going to let the GT outfielder who got the bird go find Beck and give him a free bird to the dome, it's time to move on folks.

Sounds like you should go join another fanbase since we are all so classless and trashy. Clown

And if you want to insult the fanbase like that, maybe you should go find another team to cheer for.

The McDonalds bag thing especially is pure garbage, but we get to hear about it every year. Dan Patrick, who has zero connection to Tennessee, is the only one who reported that. People around the program who said Pruitt absolutely paid recruits, still say the McDonalds thing is a pure fabrication.

McDonalds bags, mustard bottles, AJ Johnson, Bray throwing beer bottles, Jennings rightfully calling out Butch’s staff, Heupel being equal to Beamer (after throttling him), I mean the media has been eating this stuff up for years, taking shots at us. Hard to blame players from any sport from talking some trash when we’re suddenly unstoppable in a major sport.

I wish it were that easy, trust me.

I guess you're one of those who agree that "What Beck did here was not only right but should be encouraged." If I'm a clown for disagreeing with that then paint my face and give me a red nose.

I don't think it is representative of the fan base but otherwise agree.

There is no "heat of the moment". EVERY action we take is either a product of a "thought" in the moment or conditioning by our thought lives prior to the moment. It doesn't come out if it wasn't in there to start with.

I'm pretty annoyed by the treatment UT has gotten over the years too. Much of it was self-inflicted by bad AD and coaching hires. Now we're seeing some success... we should have class about it.

Here’s what I think, personally I would be upset if it were my kid and he did it. That said I can also understand this team has been vilified all year by damn near everyone in the media. They’ve been accused of every kind of cheating from loaded bats to loaded catchers. They’ve had ESPN say on national broadcasts that they use PEDs.

Now I don’t agree with it but I kind of understand Beck telling some of these people that have accused this team of everything under the sun to go F themselves.

Yeah, I don't know about it being "encouraged," but I do feel like Tennessee and the fan base has gotten a raw deal by the national media. I'm kind of at the same point of saying "F off." We really don't know what happened, maybe the fans heckled the guy and deserved it, or maybe he is a cocky SOB. Either way, I like it. I like the bat flips, the stare downs, the ritual celebrations, etc.

I still can't figure out the taking a knee and breaking an egg over your face thing when they get a double. It's looks glorious, though.

No I don’t agree with what he did but I don’t think it’s right you implying our fanbase is classless and trashy every fanbase has its bad apples.

One person posts something and you say completely expected for this fanbase. Sounds like you don’t like being a fan of this team too much. Try another team and see if some fans don’t say anything to upset you. Yep you’re a clown today.

As a general rule, it is both possible and desirable to have some class in life, whatever you're doing. Playing sports, working, at a party with friends, or at the mall. Always better to be polite and respectful.

Having said that, 20-year-olds are gonna 20-year-old. I flipped a ton of birds earlier in life, as well as shot dozens of moons and other less-than-classy stunts. *shrug* it's all a part of growing up for a significant segment of the population.

For the folks saying our players should do stuff like this all the time, or that antics like this are an important part of baseball: No. They aren't. Stuff happens, but it doesn't make anyone a better ball player. There are tons of ways to make baseball more fun without the birds and FUs. The coats and hands-over-eyes poses are good examples of good-natured fun. The lads on this squad are full of fun. They don't need birds for that.

For the folks saying he should be punished, come on. It was a bird finger, not capital murder. Let's have a sense of perspective here. A "don't do that" from the coach is more than enough.

For those (like that post the OP linked) who think there's some massive anti-Tennessee crusade going on by the world at large: please come back to reality. We get no more or less grief than any other program.

And for all the folks who understand that the middle ground is the right place to be on this kind of issue, good on you. You have a decent head on your shoulders.

Go Vols! Win super-regionals!

I'd generally prefer that sort of thing not happen, but who knows what's said on the field or if there's something else going on we don't know about it. Tournaments are charged with emotion, and I'd rather have a fighter charged with energy than a player that's an emotional flatliner. And for people to say that shouldn't be part of the game, I say study the history of the game. Baseball's had worse behavior than that since its inception. Read about Ty Cobb. He once beat a disabled heckler in the stands. That's pretty awful, but baseball has always had talkers, fighters and finger flippers.

They all have bad apples but I think it's safe to say we have noticeably more bad apples than usual.

I say it's expected because it's become normal for us. It's most prevalent on social media, which is where the OP's post came from. Before this issue we were making excuses for our fans littering the field during the Ole Miss game. We've also been known to create petitions to get coaches fired with thousands of signatures. Boo our own team. And rally around slogans like "Vols, Bitch". I love that we aggressively support our team but we have a reputation of taking things too far. There's nothing wrong with saying JB should have kept his finger in his fist. And there's nothing wrong with saying our fans shouldn't be praising JB's actions. Applauding him for it is a classless and trashy thing to do, and I fully expected it to be done.
