Thoughts on The South Carolina Game Saturday

A big unknown is how Bentley will play in his first SEC game. As we all know our secondary has been challenged at times this year. He put up decent #s in his debut threw a couple of TDs... against UMass's vaunted defense

With the returning personnel, I don't think this one will be close. I think Hurd and Kelly have big games. I think we'll see some deep passes and we run the ball down their throats.

I hope someone is close enough to catch them. For what ever reason we just don't seem to complete many of them. Run route badly, over throw (usually) or something else. Just don't connect well enough to be a real threat to a defense. Therefore defenses seem to cheat up on us more than they should.

We win. But its much closer than some want. Also, our defense will give up quite a few yards and TDs.

We need this to be an utter beatdown to improve the perception of the program. However, I think your assessment is probably what will end up happening.

I hope we don't pass the ball one single time vs this team, but when we do pass I hope we connect on 2 TD passes to Malone, 1 to Byrd and 1 to Jennings. Or get Jalen 150 yds and Kelly get 100, Dobbs 75

If at any point in the game Will Muschamp isn't stamping around screaming and cursing, that just means we haven't put up enough points on the scoreboard yet. (Some people are surprised the first time they see a chicken that already got its head chopped off moving around and still making noise, but that's just his nerves. It's already dead though.) South Carolina's a state of perpetual disappointment, but that might just be because of their coach and some of those sorry fans who showcased their stupidity on their cockytalk forum.

In general, the last several years they have been as equal to or better than us so of course they were going to be close games

I know they suck this year and they're 3-4 but it doesn't seem to matter when they play us each year. For whatever reason they seem to stick with us during the game. I know we're past the "gauntlet of games" but I hope we don't take this lightly.

Perhaps I'm still down about that Bama game.

How are you guys feeling?

We've upset them the last 3 years, so the games being close are a tribute to us not them. That's changed this year & there is no reason this game should be close, even with our injuries!
GO VOLS!!

Butch seems to always come out of the bye week with his teams well prepared. We are getting healthier. I don't look for an all out blow out but I think we will handle business just fine. It'll be nice to see Kirkland and a few others back on the field.

Not trying to bring up the very recent past, but didn't we have at least 2 weeks to prepare for App State?

I'm still not sure that Butch considers these things -- being ranked #9 preseason / fully preparing so as not to barely escape a loss in Game 1 to an App St and dropping back to #18 -- as important to total team moral / the way the program is perceived by the nat'l media.

I'm sure if we just "handle business" this weekend, it will go a long way towards everyone perceiving us as a playoff contender. Let's see how well-prepared Coach runs it.

It will likely be a close game unfortunately. My guess is SC is actually winning at halftime. Vols come back and win in close one. This seems to the trend.

I get where you're coming from but I feel that was just a bad choice for a first game of the season. I don't understand why the "don't take too much from the first game" narrative only applies when we blow somebody out that we should. I'll give you that we looked like hot garbage in game 1, can't deny that.

As for being a playoff contender, I've heard people say it, we are still alive but barely. Have to have a lot of help. But we probably have the two best losses in the country. Granted Alabama smoked us. But say Ohio State losing to Penn State was the start of a crazy last few weeks of the season and we do get the help we need and make it to Atlanta. We get to Atlanta with a potential playoff birth on the line anything can happen.

Do I think that last scenario plays out? Probably not but if this season has taught me one thing, it's never say never. My point is there's a lot of ball to be played.

Truthfully, I'm not even excited about this game. I have never been able to "get up" against South Carolina. I think the Vols should win handily but who knows? I will never be excited to play South Carolina. Such a ho hum program down there in Columbia. I haven't attended that many games in Knoxville in my years but the ones I did I always took my kids to see the Vols against South Carolina because I knew it would be a Vol victory..... and it was. You know you have entered the boring part of the schedule when you see South Carolina on it.

If you look at performance stats to date, the Vols should defeat the Capons 31 - 17. If the Vols Offense is "on" throughout, then, their output alone could push the score to over 40. If the Vols avoid penalties, hang onto the ball, disrupt the Capons' offense, rattling their QB, then, additional defensive & special teams scores could drive the margin of victory higher.

I don't have a good feeling about it honestly. I know SC isn't very good on paper but they always seem to be up for us and considering how we won last year, I'm sure they have had this game circled since the beginning of the season.

I've got tickets on the 50 at Williams Brice so I'll do my best to yell obscene things at Chump to distract him.

I think we either blow them out completely or lose in a close one.

Hopefully it's the former.

I hope Butch Jones leaves all starters in the game and tries to get to 70.

I Formation with Hurd is going to make all the difference. He goes for 250 yards. Book it.

I hope UT demoralizes South Carolina.. GBO!!!

We run the ball for 250 yards in this game and win 38-17.......

It might look close early on, but Dobbs, Hurd, and Kelly gash the chickins.......

GO VOLS!
