Thoughts on the South Carolina Game, after sleeping on it

I feel better about our WRs after this game. Id love to see what this receiving corp could do with accurately thrown balls consistently tossed their way.

I'm not the only one out here noticing Gray goes down too easily, it's not that hard to see really. I'm also not out here saying we can't win with him or crying for his backup to play. Nice try but another terrible "gotcha moment" by you. Keep spinning it spinner!!
I'm not the only one out here critiquing JG either. And when have I buckled down and said BM or JT has to play over JG? Some have, I know. I think they both have abilities that JG doesnt, but that doesn't necessarily make them ready to lead a team. I have said TN has won in spite of JGs poor play at times. (See Indiana) . No one who watches the games with unbiased eyes can disagree that he is inconsistent and mediocre at best for a 5th year senior.

So why do you get a pass on critiquing Eric Gray but I can't critique JG without your childish, NeverJGer, attacks?

I don't get after anyone whose major criticism is that he's inconsistent, I've said it, the coaches have said it and I really don't recall anyone saying anything different. I've explained, the ones that spew pure hyperbole and BS, that say we can't win with him, he can't think fast enough, we'll never beat any of the big 3, we would have scored 56 with someone else, he misses 9 of 10 throws or even saying he made 11 bad throws last night. If you want to believe that BS then fine, but if it's not something you'd say in the locker room in front of the whole team then I think it's a garbage, hide behind a screen name opinion. I like to debate and argue and when all the NegaVol neverJGers put out nonsense I call them out on it. As for being critical of Gray I don't think saying he goes down too easily is anywhere near the vitriol that has been aimed at JG. He had just 40 yards on 12 carries last night and the only tackles he broke all night was the TD run, you guys say JG put up terrible numbers and continue to totally ignore how pathetic our running game has been and looks like might still be. You're trying to compare apples to oranges.

Heres something not JG related!

Probably an unpopular opinion, but I really wasn't feeling the stripes on the pants so much. I think it's better without. They'll probably grow on me though.

JG has no rhythm in the passing game. He cannot throw on time to save his soul. Even when he does complete passes he's late when he does throw it. That's one of the reasons not only does he throw it over wide open players, he throws it behind them as well. It's why as a fifth year player he still takes sacks rather than throwing the ball away. He has no touch on throws which is why he overthrows he's putting too much on the ball when the guy has no one within ten yeards of him and just a little touch would complete the pass. Keyton's wide open miss downfield over his head is a textbook example of how JG cannot put touch on the ball. He zipped it out there like he was trying to throw it out of bounds which he rarely does and takes a sack, He's hopeless IMO as a P5 QB.

I feel like we kind of have to be "pass-happy". If we weren't the defense would be able to key in on loading the box, knowing that the passing game likely wasn't going to be enough to get it done with limited attempts, while also being able to shut down our running game. We have to pass it around a lot to show that we can, to keep the defense from the loading the box on us.

Yeh, I think Chaney is calling it scared. He doesn't trust the Oline enough yet and is terrified of being made one dimensional. He probably feels like if they start loading the box , we'll be put in a position we can't counter. He's gonna have to get that mentality in check or it's going to cost us some games we probably could win . I know we were technically balanced at the end of the day, but you gotta lay the hammer down on those short yardage situations and stop kicking long field goals and getting fancy.

Why are we the only team in america that feel we need to run for 180 yards game for our passing to be effective????? I hear that all the time...other teams do it and do it well

All of that....and you still didn't address my question directly. It's apples to apples btw. I criticize JGs inconsistency, you call me a name. You criticize Eric Gray, and it's valid. You can type a million words and dodge it if that makes you feel better about your own hypocrisy, but it is what it is.

And I went back and watched the condensed game. There were plenty of times Gray got hit and stayed up. His TD run being one of them.

OP noted that Chaney is too pass happy. Here in GA, UGA fans hated Chaney because he RAN too much. I told them it was Kirby because Chaney loves to throw the ball.

I think Chaney is so good. We had tons of plays with a WR wide open for an easy throw. JG missed several of them, but the guy is a crazy good play designer.

TONS of plays with a wide open receiver? WR were not running wide open all night, coverage was actually the exact opposite of what you say. I watched the film pretty good, other than the 6 bad throws when did he miss an open receiver? Even CJP said he made the right decisions as to who he threw to. I thought our playcalling was very vanilla last night, other than the post routes he called on 3rd and 6.

Whatever guy, if you think me saying Gray goes down too easy is the same type criticism that JG is getting then no sense in me debating you over the point.

were up 21 14 and have a fourth and two deep in. Should have gone for it. Get the first down and score, the game is 28 14 and we coasting! Instead, miss FG and the game is tied!

should have had faith in OL and gone for it!
This ... I had the talking heads muted and was listening to Kesling and Priest. Quite delayed due to internet streaming - about 3 plays behind whats on the TV, but still better.

Priest was caught with a hot mic saying that was the WRONG decision. Man I love the truth that he can't throttle back at times. Another time he said about a Guarentano 3rd down throw; "Wilt Chamberlain couldn't have caught that".

OP great insights. I’m looking forward to seeing Pruitt get some unforced errors cleaned up. He’s been pretty good at that. I look at it that this is a game we probably lose over the past 5 years. We get SEC E win, let’s clean some things up. You can see we’ve got some talent...not like previous years...and think have some good senior leadership...especially on OL.

IMO if we continue to count on JG at QB we lose several games we should win or could win.

JG is a Backup QB at Best! Why do i say that? He is a 5 yr RS QB that is still throwing passes over Recievers heads! And this is not something new. He has been doing this his whole career!

I am an old football player myself and i am not going for the old passage that he has not had enough time with his receivers. I am calling BS on that crap. You mean to tell me he never threw to any of his WR's during the summer? I don't buy it. And I don't see other QB's in the league having that issue. Like i said this issue is not something new with JG.

He also has a highlight reel full of him going down on 1st contact. If he's ever going to be an every down back he's got to get better at that and I believe he will. He showed marked improvement in his pass rush blocking skills yesterday being a key role in the game winning drive on the successful pass play to Johnson.
A whole REEL? Had to be from last season...maybe he got BETTER? I’ve heard players do that from season to season. 😉

The only thing consistent about this offense is that it is inconsistent.

Given the QB situation and Chaney calling the plays I don't see it changing much.

I don't hate either guy like some on here but they are both good for a few WTF play calls or throws a game every single game.

My bad, that's an example of the hyperbole I often criticize, I'll do better. I like Gray and wish we would use him out in space more. He's improved his blitz pick up too, had a key block on the big pass gain to Johnson. That was a really good pre read by JG on that play as well, perfect execution I would call it.

-Jeremy Banks is a monster at ILB if he can keep his head straight. Let's say he had some "coachable" moments. But man, he's like a missile out there.

Both him and Crouch got burned several times on RB pass coverage. Teams that watch this film will have our lunch if this doesn't get fixed.

I think if we had spring ball, it may be a different story. But, JG typically doesn't turn the ball over that much...maybe he'll clean up airmailing receivers. If not, you gotta give some other guys a chance...we'll know soon enough.
