Thoughts on retaining Hobby, Garner or both

Here is a thought.....WHY? WHY can a university like TN say -- you/we will keep X,Y & Z? It's not NEGOTIABLE. Seriously, ask yourself why. You folks in "business", tell me why. What exactly prevents us, or anyone else for that matter, from saying NO? And DO NOT come at me with...'well that's the way it's done'. F that, because it's not smart. Right now, I'd suggest that half to 90% of coaching the 2025 carousel won't work. If so, it's basically the definition of insane.... yet it's still done regardless of a HIGHLY negative return. So WTF do it? Personally, at MANY universities - I would NOT do it and it's not even debatable.

What in God’s name are you talking about?

With the news that Arkansas is targeting Marion Hobby for their open DL Coach position and Garner's contract expiring on Jan 31, 2026, what direction do you think DC Knowles is going with the DL coach position? Garner is a known commodity. He pretty much excels in all areas of being a position coach. I know Hobby was in an analyst position this past season, but he is almost as well regarded as Garner. His resume is extensive in both college football and the NFL. Plus, the VFL status doesn't hurt. I know that his career and DC Knowles career have crossed at the same time several times (w/ Cutcliffe at Ole Miss and Duke). IMO, based on their combined experience, it would be best if Tennessee could somehow retain both. Is this feasible? Just wondering what some of the more knowledgeable folks think about this situation.

I think Rodney's situation is most about his family situation and how that can be worked out. I would think he would be back if the family gets comfortable.

On Marion, could see him staying in analyst role unless he gets an offer that he can't pass up. That is a real possibility.

Of course what Knowles decides on all position could influence the outcomes for both. Right now there is just uncertainty on the direction he will go for all positions. IMO, Knowles will get a lot of it settled this week but there may not be any announcements until after the bowl game...

Hope we can keep Garner, but he needs to make up his mind ASAP. High caliber DL coaches don't fall out of the sky.

Can you elaborate on Garner's family decision? He's been in Knoxville for 5 years, so what has changed?

Force a coordinator to work with assistants he didn’t want to? Bc no one worth a damn will do that. Period

From what I have read, the expectation is that RG will be back. I think the interesting one is Chop. Apparently was not very popular with the LEO’s this season. You are hearing chatter about the two returning LEO’s possibly entering the portal. The word on chop is great recruiter. Not a very good coach.
I have heard the opposite rumor about RG. From what I heard, he getting close to retiring and potentially wants to move closer to his family in Alabama. He might make a move to Auburn as a result.

Given what we have heard about the complexity of the Knowles scheme, it may be more imporant to bring in guys that know his system to hit the ground running in Year One. Keeping Garner would be great though.
