Consider the following:

A preferred walk on is at least the same size, speed, ability as others in his position group. The PWO has demonstrated himself at practice and during scrimmages (Orange and White games) and not only has proven himself capable but better than half in the group. Coach says in press conferences that many players have done what it takes and deserves to play. In your opinion, should the PWO "be allowed" to be considered for playing time, or never "be allowed" because he has the label of PWO? Would it always be considered to be not in the best interest of the coach to play a PWO over scholarship players? Why would the coach not take credit for "discovering" the player as a diamond in the rough?

If they're "equal" you play the scholarship guy.

Regardless you play the best player. To answer your question.

Right now Bryan Aiken is the only dude that is a PWO that will be a scholarship player...

In my opinion, and for some reason I think this staff's, they should play the best player on a game to game basis. If the PWO shows up and shows out, by all means let them play. I say this with a simple caveat, take a look at what this coaching staff has brought onto our campus as a PWO compared to past regimes. There are some of the PWOs that are far better than scholarship players in the past. They just made them PWOs to placate the star children amongst our fan base.

From experience, they will always play the scholly guy before either walk on. That is because they have an "investment" in the scholly guy.

My take is this: We should go with a base offense of two tight ends (maybe the one on the left is Jam. Johnson/w/a TE number). Two flankers and an RB ...Just like we did against Notre Dame that time when Hubert Simpson wore a track down Shields-Watkins Field, just running the A and B gaps. Let the Big Dogs eat, and let's see who has the fuzzy 'nads. Play everybody we can,...and see if we are capable of playing anything like Tennessee Football. When they crowd the front...hurt them deep. This is the kind of game we need EVERY YEAR.

I personally do not give a rip if the kid was in the band last week if he is the best player for the job he should play!
that's generally the way it is everywhere. there are times when no schollies are left and a kid still wants to play for that team, such as Bain mentioned above. Took him awhile but he got put on scholarship. Not sure of the exact number but quite a few are at UT now including 3 QB's that I know of.

Most if not all of the walkons are now PWOs. Teams give out anywhere from 15-20 every year depending on how many are lost from the previous year. A PWO gets everything the scholarship guy gets except for scholarship money. Our new transfer QB is a walkon but that was a special case. I don't think UT has a tryout date for WO anymore. Coaches play the best players regardless of how or why they are on the team. Most PWOs were really good HS players. We're picking a kid up next year as a PWO that holds nearly every record in his state at RB yet he may not be good enough to get on the field as a Vol as the SEC consist of the best players in the world age 17-23.

I guess my main question would be, what would be the reasons that a coach would NOT play a PWO over a scholarship player, if the PWO was deemed a better player? The only thing I can come up with is that the coach would look like a poor recruiter or simply because there was a financial investment in the scholarship player. I would hope that in the best interest of the team the best player would play, and other would possibly get nth team reps.

Well according to Pruitt he plays the best player no matter what. So. Unless we are citing a specific example of him not playing the best player then I don’t know what we are talking about.

Andrew Craig was a PWO, but recently got put on scholarship. He's listed as the third TE behind DWA and Pope.

So, how is the PWO QB we signed looking in summer camp? (Name escapes me now, but doesn't appear PWO's are on roster listing). Did he show anything worthy? Even compete enough to push the others?
