Thoughts on Memphis

Its a rivalry thats why we play every year so we can come into memphis and try to sneak a good player away from coach cal. If it werent a rivalry we wouldnt be playin them every year. Tn wants to play them in BB as much as memphis wants to play us in football.

We don't play them every year. If we did the game would have been played more than 18 times, and Cal wouldn't have tried to get out of playing it 3 years ago.

BB we play every year and football its like every 3 out of 4 years. Its very good to come into memphis and beat them in BB it helps us major on recruiting.

It's not a rivalry. You think so because you live in West TN. That's all there is to it.

Haha, they think we have a rivalry? That's so cute...I've lived in Knoxville pretty much my entire life and never once heard of Memphis being referred to as a rival. Why would we consider our little sickly cousin a rival? Sounds like they grasp for straws to me. They need a nice dose of reality.

A rivalry with Memphis would be like having one with UTC

we started playing them every year about 10 years ago or so Cal tried to get a game every year in Nashville so it wouldnt hurt his recruiting so we said we wouldnt play them in football and that stopped the nashville thing.

That may very well be the longest, most senseless sentence I have ever read.

Look, here is the point. Memphis might hate TN, but we don't hate them. And you definitely have to hate a rival. And you know why we don't hate them? Because they have never had anything for us to be jealous of or to care about. They have never crushed our team's chances in a championship game or anything. They aren't in our conference, and until a few years ago we could've cared less about basketball.
Now, if Calipari and Pearl remain in the spotlight at the national stage for a few more years and final fours and #1 seeds in the tournament are on the line a few times, well then maybe we will start having a tiny rivalry.

Memphis just wants a rival because they don't have one. Want to know why? Because they have no history or tradition with freaking anyone. Because they don't play in a real conference.

Memphis and Louisville used to be a big basketball rivalry. Poor Memphis had their rivalry mate leave them though.

You can't be rivals in one sport and not another. Either you are or are not rivals. Plain and simple. I guarantee you if Memphis had even a mediocre football team they would consider it a huge rivalry. They only considered basketball a rivalry because they thought they had the edge there for a while.

So what man? Yay, they have been good in basketball. WE NEVER CARED AT ALL ABOUT BASKETBALL UNTIL THE LAST FEW YEARS. And it's not like they truly affect the outcome of our season. Any big basketball rivalries are going to be in conference, because the outcome of the game affects something. Us playing Memphis might determine if we get a #1 seed, but in the ultimate scheme of things it doesn't really matter. Just because we want to win a basketball game against a good team like Memphis doesn't make it a rivalry.

The Memphis game matters to UT big time for future recruits. Memphis is the best area in the state for recruiting so yeah it matters.

Thats false....I know plenty of people who care more about the basketvols than football...Speak for yourself.

Time out.......

My post was simple, BTW I'm NOT a fan of the Tigers.
It was to say that as history shows, there is little comparison between the two schools in basketball. Let's be honest....Memphis is superior in basketball as a WHOLE. That is all. UT has a great chance to beat them next week.

And....a "troll"???? come on. find something better than that.
Being this defensive does show a lack of confidence though. Go vols and soooooooooooooo sorry to rile everyone up on the obvious!

Personally, I don't think it si a rivalry unless we continue to play annually and the games are competitive. Rivalries are no fun if one team continually dominates. I just think this is an absolutely great game for the fans and it will be very exciting based on the style of play, but a rivalry it is not.IMO Although, I would love to see it turn into a yearly rivalry. Another reason people in Memphis look at this as a rivalry is because it is Memphis' biggest game of the year and even though it doesn't matter to most UT fans, it is a big deal to
memphis basketbal fans because it is the biggest game of the year for us.

I don't really think much about them at all. They are in a mid-major conference. I don't consider them a rival in anything. This year in basketball shapes up as a great game but certainly not a rivalry.
