Ok, I want to get some opinions from some on the board because I don't know as much about "Dormandy" Dormady as some do. All I've seen of him is when he is running mop up duty in blow out games and even then he really isn't running the offense, but handing it off to John Kelly (who is going to be a stud). That said, from what I do know about him, I know that he is accurate throwing the ball. My concern is that with the oline that we have coming back next year, is Dormady the best fit for this particular offense. Even as an accurate passer, if he were behind this oline at the beginning of the year, this would have been Worley 2.0....Worley was pretty accurate and tough as nails. His issue is that he had one foot in the grave all season as teams blitzed at will. We knew all year that Dobbs needed to replace him, and once we got a mobile QB in, we went on a tear, and the offense improved greatly.

My point is that it seems as though this offense requires a mobile QB. Would Guarantano not be the better fit? I know Butch prefers to play the upper classmen when given the chance, and I know the backup QB is the most popular player on the team at all times. I expect Richmond to improve, Chance Hall to be a beast, and the guard play to improve, but unless Dormady has wheels like a Chad Kelly, Trevor Knight, etc, I worry about him in our offense. Everyone seems to be excited about Dormady though, so I'm sure there is something I must be missing. :hi:

I don't know that the comparison to Worley is fair. We haven't seen Dormady run the offense, so the jury is out, but I don't think he's completely void of mobility. Can he improvise the same plays as JD? Probably not, but that doesn't mean he can't keep it enough on the zone read to keep the defense honest and be elusive enough to be effective passing the football.

At this point, I am fully comfortable believing that CBJ and company will play the guy who gives them the best chance to win.

One would think Butch Jones knows what kind of QB "works" in his "offense", and probably recruits accordingly.

VOLS team 121 will need the dual threat capabilities of Guarantano to build on the momentum set by team 120.

Worley was not accurate. We have yet to see if Dormady is accurate. He was ok in his limited time so far.

Hopefully, he commits less turnovers than Dobbs. I like what Dobbs brings with his legs and leadership, but 8 interceptions is a bit much just 6 games into the season. Along with the fumbles lost

It's a very limited sample, but Dormady threw an absolute dime on a long fade route during the homecoming game that the receiver dropped. It was placed absolutely perfectly. Dobbs has finally hit a few that were on point, but that one from Dormady was perfect. Up until then, Dobbs hadn't hit one like.

I would think that Guarantano could be the starting quarterback in 2017 and Sherion Jones could also be in the mix depending on what happens during the offseason.

Dobbs threw several better passes versus SEC teams before that Domady pass.

Williams had to slow up and stop to catch a pass that would have been broken up by a SEC db. It was ok but I find it laughable that one decent pass vs a 2nd or 3rd string Sunbelt db proves anything. He threw some that were horrible too.

Dormady hasn't proven anything except he can hold a clipboard so far. Dobbs and JG looked better passing in the fall according to practice reports.

We will be in good hands either way. Both have a good arm and Dormady is more mobile than people think but my personal opinion is that JG is the perfect fit for this offense. He has some wheels.

I get that but in a way his recruitment of QBs is a little confusing. Let me explain. Dobbs was a pro style QB coming out of HS. So was Riley Ferguson. Butch also went after highly rated guys like David Cornwell and Hunter Johnson. All pro style QBs. For 2018, Butch was in on the #1 pro style QB Trevor Lawrence. Jones and Guarantano are DTs. So does Butch want a DT? Pro style? Or a mixture? I think he may want a mixture.

I wouldnt count Jones out. He has some good wheels and can throw well. But like you said, we are good either way. Its going bto be exciting to see the QB competition. Now hopefully the OL improves significantly to give whatever QB wins the job adequate time to throw.

I get this question in other years, but this is a year we just need to live in the present and worry about that when the time comes.. JMO.

Lets get through the next 7 games with Dobbs first.....a lot left to play for to be worrying about who next up

Perfect thread to place this thought. JG is a strong possibility to win the spot, but my hope is that Sheriron doesn't follow Dormady in the resulting transfer...which is more than a possibility. In no way should that affect the results of the competition, but the underlying worry is that despite the back and forth over Dobbs passing, he has been impressively DURABLE! Name the last Vols QB that has answered the next call to start so consistently. Crompton did it for a season and I think Ainge in 2007, but you probably had to go back to Tee Martin for a signal caller that strung two together. JG went down in each of his last two HS seasons, hence the concern. We lose Dormady AND Jones and we possibly have a 3 deep of JG,CJ Lewis and Zac Jancek...might be a few threads come out of that scenario.
