Thoughts on Clawson (merged)

There may be WR's open but his situational play calling leaves a lot to be desired. He keeps calling the G-gun formation while never having passed out of it. Even if it is a wasted play it keeps the defense honest. There are many other examples just too painful to bring up.

The G-Gun may work every now and then if you throw out of it. Also, can we do something across the middle? I know he dumbed the playbook down so JC could be comfortable but this offense is just as boring as cutcliffes

As I have replied in other threads, Fulmer still has a leash on him. Clawson is a proven coach. Let him coach Fulmer.

I'm not so sure he is against quality defenses. The reason there is a leash on him is because this is the sec.

Yeah, because God knows Crompton never effectively learned to hand off a ball in peewee, highschool, or the 3 years he was at UT, under one of the better offensive Coordinators to school QB's, with Cutcliffe.

Yep... definitely Clawson's fault.
I agree with the sarcasm. As badly as we seem to need new coaching at times, the players have to "step up" as well.

There's been a lot of play calling that seems awfully "cute" to be Fulmer. I don't think most people perceive Phil as the kind of guy that calls that many passes in short yardage situations.

I have to question how much leash (at least up to this point) there's been.

At the press conference they asked this question and we got 3 answers, from 3 different people.

Fulmer: "I let my coordinators run the way they want it, with little guidance, there is no leash."

Clawson: "I have no leash, I take full responsibility, even for Crompton dropping the hand off at the GL."

Crompton: "When I pet smokey, he has a pretty leash."

I respect Clawson a lot. If you break down our offensive gameplan you will see that it was very sound. Think about how Clawson's offense would have looked with Ainge or even Rick Clausen running it. I think he called a great game. Unfortunately, his QB makes him look terrible. At this point, I don't even blame Clawson for the UCLA game because he apparently knew that he had to get JC every pass attempt that he could. How pathetic is it that true freshman come in and play better football every year?

i agree, i think clawson didn't know what he's gotten himself into. i think offense would have better numbers if he has a QB that could see the 2nd and 3rd options in a pass play.

Umm, Clawson's playcalling hasn't exactly been on a Spurrier-esque level. Remember the abandonment of the run in Los Angeles?

I do agree with this, but I will say that the 2 games I've seen live,(UCLA-Fla) WR's are running free, especially the UCLA game. I thought they should have ran the ball more, but if your seeing your WR's running basically free, hard not to say to yourself, Crompton has to hit one of these guys sooner or later, just never came about. I personally like this guy, but have nothing more than that to back up my opinion. Maybe Cut saw something missing in Crompton that none of us knew. He seemed to never take to JC. And I think that sparked alot of the BJ Coleman talk on this fine forum.

How interesting would it be to see Stephens trot out for the opening play at Auburn!

Followed by Poole and Creer

I really feel bad for Clawson, and regardless of what, if anything, happens at the end of the season with Fulmer, I hope Clawson is given the chance to prove himself, because he hasn't been given that yet.

I’m not ready to throw Clawson under the bus. I believe Clawson is a very good Offensive Coordinator and if he had a QB smart enough to run his Offense it would show. There are just too many things Crompton does that makes me feel he’s not “THE” guy for the job. I have never seen him check off, he seems to telegraph to which receiver he’s throwing too, he also seems to give hint to when he’s having the ball snapped to him. Looks like he is moving backwards before the ball is snapped at times. I don’t understand how someone could possibly throw so many balls towards the ground and many many many times he will throw to the covered receiver and miss completely the receiver, RB or TE that was open.

I mean, to me, and I may be wrong here, but to me, if the OC calls the play and after the ball is snapped you have a TE that is open 15 yards downfield and the QB throws to the Wide Receiver that is to his right, that’s on the QB, not the OC. I watched “CLAWSON” move that team down field on multiple occasions and Florida couldn’t do anything to stop it. That to me was Clawson’s Play Calling and then the QB messes it up by throwing an Interception, Fumbling the ball and failing to recognize open receivers, RB’s, TE’s.

Many of you are ready for a change and I will agree with you that a Change would be nice, but I also would hate to lose Clawson after one season and never get to see his true potential, I truly believe he’s an Offensive Genius, he has excelled at every program he has ever been associated with.

This post sums up everything that I feel and have been saying about the situation. Dead on. The only reason I don't want Fulmer to go immediately is to keep the current offensive coaching staff. Clawson, Drayton and Scott could truly be something special. They fit everything that I would want in a coaching staff. Too bad we can't just get rid of Fulmer, Chavis and Slade. I'd also like to keep Caldwell and Brooks.

So the question you need to ask yourself is do you believe we would be better off with Fulmer as HC and get to keep Clawson?

Or do you believe we need a change at HC knowing that Clawson would most likely be out the door as well?

And what would you say to those that point to the horrible discipline our team has shown thus far. Discipline on an offense is probably the first thing any good coach should address, right?

This sounds reasonable.

I really hope that whatever happens, if anything, at the end of this season to Fulmer that Clawson will be allowed to stay and be given the chance to prove himself, which he has not yet been given. I actually feel bad for all of the new coaches that we just got with the situation being as it is right now, and hope we can keep all of them.

These are just excuses, all of these problems should have been addressed this spring. Here we are beginning the meat of our season and these are still problems. Fix the problems, hell bench players who aren't getting it done and see what the others will give you. It can't hurt at this point can it?
Question on the table seems to be is it primarily the coaching staff's game preparation or the players execution which is at fault for what we seen in the games. You know almost everyone agrees that our staff recruits well. OK, then if that is the case either our coaches don't develope players in position by postion technique or our players execution sucks. As I look at the issue it's a coaching/management issue either way they ain't gettin er done. Couple this with University officials turning a blind eye to performance that is unacceptable to fans the only way to turn this tide is attendance and ticket sales. It's similar to Wal- Mart strategy, as long as they keep coming back spendin $$$ who the hell cares what they think. That is whats goin on in Hamiltons mind you can believe that.

I am not ready to throw him under the bus either, but I am ready to put him on a bus to anywhere but here or Auburn, Alabama.

Honestly, I don’t know what to think at this point. I know there are hard decisions to be made and the questions you ask are legitimate questions that when answered will determine the fate of the staff. This is nothing more than suggesting a scenario but a good scenario in my eyes, would be for Fulmer to realize that his time has passed and for Hamilton to offer him a position within the system and Clawson take over for the remainder of the season as an Interim Head Coach and we go from there. I Simply do not want to lose Clawson under any circumstances, that’s my stance really. I feel to the bottom of my heart that if we had a QB smart enough to understand this Offensive scheme that Clawson is trying to run, this football team would not have two losses right now and it is very possible that we might of won the Florida game, although not guaranteed but possible. A simple change at the QB position could possibly take us down the stretch but I don’t think that QB Change is going to happen unless we lose at least two more games.

I'd point directly at Phillip Fulmer. We all know that Fulmer has a hard time keeping his hand out of the pot. Everything I've ever read/heard/seen out of Clawson does not point to a lack of discipline. Look at the recruits we have commited this year. That should tell you everything you need to know about our new staff and the type of players they want. I'd say that it's a tough situation for an OC to come in and be a disciplinarian on a team that lacks discipline and always has under the current staff. Nobody wants to show up their boss when they first start a job.
