Thoughts on CKC

yeah but even if so, what about the other games against top opponents that we stayed close? if we didn't have one season to see what the system can do at times, i might be more in agreement. but, it is clear we have a team full of players (upperclassman mostly) who are not leaders or built for a change to their play.

The point is teams are adjusting to it. The second or third time an opponent sees the system, they know how to beat the system. So we end up with our players being winded and tired while the other team is making layups and not even looking tired.

And to add, some of them are even beating us with a clone of what we are trying to do.

i definitely think teams are adjusting. i just believe they are adjusting to half ass effort which has been the theme for much of the season. the truth is neither one of us is right here. we don't even know what the players are capable of right now.

Every coach, every team has rotten apples. Other coaches are better at dealing with them.
Right. Plus CKC picked those “rotten apples”. Also Im curious why folks who feel the players are lazy bums think Kim never simply benched them like any other coach would do.

We stayed within a possession against Texas, lost to OK by 7. Other than that, 9 of the 13 losses have been by double digits, including the last 6 in a row. Saying this team has stayed close would be a huge stretch.

Just my opinion, but it seems CKC has shown more loyalty to her “system” than her players. When you watch other teams get layup after layup off your press and do nothing about it because that’s your “system”. When you continue to shoot 3 after 3 even though your percentage is poor because that’s your “system”. It is the literal definition of insanity.

Agree. Even if you buy the overly simplistic reason that the open layups are caused by lazy players then why doesnt she bench them? You’re right, so much of the frustration has always been her odd detachment from the situation.

I believe she almost beat SC last year if im right on a less talented team with this system and got blown out by them by a lazy team this year. If she benched players and played all freshmen, cause they gave up or quit then everyone would bash her for that. I think you are correct i support CKC also.
I remember TN had a 9 point lead in the first qtr last year but SC had a big lead in the 3rd Qtr and TN came back in the 4th to make look respectable.

We left the South Carolina game last year early because it was so horrific and I had an early meeting. Dawn put her true bench in during the fourth quarter, and then Kaniya Boyd just ran in transition for a bunch of layups to make the score look respectable. Honestly, the same pattern that we've seen this season with top-tier teams.

Somewhat dissagree. Her system worked pretty good last year and there was alot of Hustle. This year there is no hustle, if u cant see on the court, players do matter. Turnovers, facial expressions. Body language, its all there. Players quit, not all it is evident but players laid down. We will be better next year. Put your pitchforks down. We havnt been that good Since Pat,so give it time, everybody wanted a UT Alum to coach, that wasnt good. Give Kim the Horse's that will hustle, then we will see.

Am I remembering correctly that last season when discussing the system she said she knows we will be giving up some of those wide open lay-ups, and that is okay because the system absorbs them by giving us 20-30 more shots a game to make up for it.

That statement is one of the things that made me question going deeper in the shot clock and seeing at the end of the game that we were no longer getting the extra attempts.

Ya she did, but you cant fix lazy. Look how many 5 stars was superstars according to people and they was at best a 3 star. So ya videos, others saying oh ya theyr awesome. Well why did they transfer in the first place. She got ponies not horses. Last years class was 10 times better. Maybe 2-3 upperclassmen and the freshmen hustle. Who since Pat has done good, who since Fulmer done good, but todays time, screw them they had time fire em! Thats all yall cry about on her. Vols have climbed out of the cellar in all sports so try to support or go apply for her job since you can do better
She has the horses! All those McDonald’s all Americans aren’t lazy. They played hard to get that recognition and they didn’t get to college going I think I’ll be lazy now.
This coach is a one trick pony whose one trick has been figured out pretty quickly by DI/SEC coaches. It does not appear she has established a good relationship with her players and the result is a sporadic, confused mess. These kids have all been winners and no doubt have the potential to and desire to win at the highest levels again. The question is do we have a coach that can pull this team together and give them the coaching and offensive and defensive systems they need?

This!!

2. Barnes and a myriad of other coaches seem to have no issue with a large number of portal players. This is going out of the way to make excuses for Kim.

3. She evaluated and recruited them.

4. Learned that her system is a gimmick that won’t work against top competition. Not exactly a great lesson to figure out that you’re going to need to flush your whole system and start over.

7. If the HC isn’t taking over in the huddle, you have the wrong HC. This is Danny’s darling pick so he isn’t going to just pull the band aid off.

The SEC isn’t a gauntlet. There are teams who are literally funneling no revenue share to women’s bball. It’s a top heavy league and the top isn’t very big. You likely have a 16-13 team that just lost 7 in a row going to the tourney. How can anyone take this as a serious sport if that’s the case? They are tied for 6th in a league of 16. You could literally hire any high school coach in the area and go 500 in the conference.

No one with a brain was expecting KC to win the SEC and make a final four in year two. That seems to be the gaslighting that’s going on. That the two choices were F4 or this. No. I’d expect the coach not to be dog cussed by her players on the sideline. I’d expect her not to call her team quitters in the media.
Barnes doesn’t take players with culture issues. Fix the culture and it will solve a good portion of the problems.

She didn’t let Janiah travel with the team. Benched cooper last game. Lowered minutes for certain players. The roster is 100% her fault and if she doesn’t fix it. We need to replace her.

Exactly! Well said.

I don't think it is just loyalty. Again, in terms of coaching credentials she does not have the I was a great player card; she does not have the coaching pedigree card (I don't think being a DII star coach really impresses recruits at this level). Her selling point is having this kamikaze system that can do all these amazing things.

It is a both her calling card and I think her security blanket when she has to go against the big time coaches.

Her challenge going forward will be selling recruits on "her" rather than the "system" (which I would dare say has been widely discredited this season).

She never should have been hired to begin with, but that is a different discussion.

She should have been fired after the South Carolina game.

When we are having this exact same conversation next March, maybe Danny will swallow his pride and fix this.
If she has the mass exodus we're all expecting, the team might struggle to break .500 next year

She barely made it above .500 with (checks notes)
-7 McDonalds All Americans
-#2 ranked freshmen class
-#1 portal haul
-1 of only 2 historic WBB programs
Culture killed this team. Barker, Zee , Coop, and Nya are Cancers and killed any hope they had to be good. The effortless 4 just play ME BALL, I for one will be glad all 4 are gone. Kim really needs to hit a HR in the portal and keep the freshmen.

I don't know if I'm expecting a mass exodus. But I'm also not not expecting it. Common sense would predict there will be one after all the on and off court dumbassery. But you never know, esp with this group. April is definitely going to tell the tale.
