Thoughts on Butch...

We've beaten Florida 5 times period over that span. Which is why that game means so much.

To be the program we want to be, we have to be relevant past September.

The answer is twice...as you know.

Going allllllllllllll the way back to Battle.

Dropping the "if you lose to either Bama or Florida, you should be fired" grenade is childish and short sighted.

But you boys carry on.

I haven't said or else. But at some point we do need to beat the floridas and bamas . And by all accounts, next year could be a good opportunity.

Plus we have both at home.

In the interest of keeping this thing progressing, wining one of those games needs to happen.

I realize you didn't say it and you've been fairly decent, but...

those two teams are playing in the SEC Championship game THIS season.

Maybe not you, but at least one and that generally means some... think it's about coaching. Fine.

How many Bama and UF players will be drafted at season's end?

How many UT players were drafted last year? Will be drafted this year?

beating Florida is a requisite for this job. It just needs to happen. we cannot be the program we want to be w/out beating them more than 20% of the time.

In 2016, we will at least be on equal ground from a talent standpoint, and it's at home.

It's going to be ok to expect to win that game next season.

That's what I don't get. This season is not over. Yet, you and others are already looking ahead.

Sure, since we broke up into divisions the Florida/Tennessee game is the big one.

I disagree that it's okay to EXPECT it, while agreeing that we can hope that at home, historically we might have a better shot. That next season we may have a healthy, talented team.

Let me show you something, sorry I don't want to type it out and make it easy....

Out for the season:

2015 Tennessee Volunteers Stats | College Football at Sports-Reference.com

Who we might play in a bowl game...

2015 Michigan Wolverines Stats | College Football at Sports-Reference.com

2015 Northwestern Wildcats Stats | College Football at Sports-Reference.com

2015 Houston Cougars Stats | College Football at Sports-Reference.com

2015 Penn State Nittany Lions Stats | College Football at Sports-Reference.com

This is not an all inclusive list, it doesn't include guys like Pig, Malone, etc...not for the other teams either.

Sunday thru Friday it's about coaching, on Saturdays it's about players making plays...we're getting there.

Enjoy the now, there is no predicting the future.

Now Florida, in Knoxville and with their backup QB, is considered a likely loss.

It's already starting.

Don't disagree at all, I've spent the majority of the past two days talking about that very thing.

we should be happy and proud of what this team accomplished this year.

for me, one of the reasons im happy is that this team is starting to turn corners. and in the interest of keeping that going, we can/should turn a corner or two next year too.

chief among those.....beating FL.

it just can't go to twelve.

I know you have, I read more than I post.

I don't think it is fair to move the goal posts. I don't think it is fair to look back and say, "well, if I knew UGA, SC and Mizzou were gonna suck, I'd of predicted 10 wins instead of eight."

While...

completely ignoring how many significant contributors we would lose on defense, not to mention the leading receiver and others like Marcus Jackson that made the team what we THOUGHT they would be.

But, that is exactly what happened, in my view.

This is such junk.

Since 1976, I was 10...how many times has a Tennessee football team won in the Swamp?

Since it became an every year game in 1990, how many times have we won won in the Swamp?

The answer for both is the same. I know the answer, do you?

Peace.

:rock2:

How do losses in the '70s affect the outcome of the 2015 game?

If you read this forum as much as you say, you should realize that people make the injury excuse year after year after year after year. We will always lose starters to injury, and so will everyone else.

Most (really all, counting Georgia) of our wins were against bad teams. If we had lost to Kentucky or North Texas or Missouri, would you really say it was acceptable because of injuries?

Remember McElwain's line in the post-game presser: "The players know, deep down, you just don't lose to Tennessee. And they didn't."

That's how we should feel about Florida. We shouldn't have lost to them the past two years. And there's no excuse to lose to them in Neyland next year.

I read.

How many people here know that Mark Stoops has a worse SEC record than Dooley after year 3? He got an extension last year, lol.

I posted the injuries above and I'd gladly post the rest of the SEC if you want.

In year 4 when we lose a legit draftable player in Maggitt and you think we're like Bama and can just take another 5* red shirt junior off the bench to replace him, I question how much real attention you pay to the program, regardless of the coach.

Then why does losing in the Swamp 30 years ago justify losing in the Swamp now?

The point was that if you, I guess, didn't beat UF or Bama this or next season, the coach should be fired.

My point was you would have to fire every coach at UT going back to the 70's if that's the standard.

Again, I'll reiterate, both teams are playing in the SEC Championship game THIS season.

Since 1990 we've beaten both UF and Bama four times. '98, '01, '03 and '04.

In the spirit of NIKE Butch, "Just do it."

It's Kentucky. Top 25 recruiting class + 5 wins + beating a team like South Carolina last year = extension. I doubt they regret it at this point.

Like you said, those lists aren't anywhere close to comprehensive, so that would be pretty pointless. You don't need 4-5 straight top 10 recruiting classes to get past the injury excuse. We're not Alabama, so it's a miracle Butch was able to beat 4-8 Missouri with all those injuries? Again, which of those wins would you have been okay with us losing?

Michigan State beat the defending champs on the road without their QB, who also happens to be their best player and probably a first-round pick. But yes, lose a DE and it's a shock we beat Vandy. Makes sense.

Most of those coaches beat one or the other, so that's not true. But said differently, you're giving Butch a free pass against Florida--an inferior team with a less experienced coach and no QB--because Fulmer couldn't beat Spurrier or Meyer. That makes no sense.

The Swamp isn't some mythical place where it's impossible to win. Freaking Georgia Southern did it in 2013 when we didn't.

everyone has injures you are correct. The big difference is how deep are you with talent. Bama, GA, UF lose a guy there is another 4* to take their place. Here at UT that simply ash not been the case lately. Now we are finally getting to that point.

Injuries and youth will not be acceptable excuses in 2016.

When youre in a situation where your backup MLB is Colton Jumper, yes, you can still use the injury excuse.

If you are a Bama fan and Nick Saban is your Coach how many games do you expect to win each year?
