This will be the toughest test of the season so far, and possibly the hardest one we face all year... I say that b/c we have Alabama at home.

On offense here are some things to consider:

1. Our ability to run the ball has without a doubt been better this year. However, UGA has one of the best run defenses we will face (other than Bama) and Jenkins in the middle is a force and will be an NFL 3-4 NG in the near future. Jarvis Jones is a playmaker and must always be accounted for on the other side of the ball at all times or he will hurt you as he's proven over and over again.

2. The weakness of this defense comes in their secondary. Especially if Rambo doesn't suit up, which early reports out of Athens seem to indicate he will not be on the field this Sat, this is an area we have to exploit. They've moved Mitchell to corner and he's done a solid job, but this will be UGA first real test when it comes to a passing attack. Hopefully our guys can put pressure on them and create mismatches. #36 is a safety for them and he's a solid player, but does not have great coverage skills... I hope we can get Hunter and CP going early so that the attention is focused on them and then work Rivera similar to the way we tried to attack them last year until Bray got hurt.

3. We need some sort of rushing attack. We all saw what happens when you become one dimensional against a good coach when we played Florida. Todd Grantham is a good defensive coach, if we allow him to make us pass happy and let his guys go at Bray, then we will be in for a long night. As I previously mentioned UGA has a great run D, so tough yards by Neal and Lane will be needed in this one. Also using the wildcat packages and speed sweeps to CP and Pig can help provide production in the run game for us.

4. We need to keep them off balance on defense. Do not let them get comfortable by mixing in draws, screens, different personnel packages etc early on in the game. The more an offense can keep the defense guessing or on its heels, the better off we will be.

5. We need AT LEAST one "new face" to show up and be productive for us. Whether it's : Rivera, Pig, Rogers, Lane or a conglomerate of all of them, we need these guys to be big and not drop balls in crucial situations for us this Saturday to have a chance.

Things to consider on Defense:

1. This offense is VERY balanced. They do a great job of establishing the running game and then hurting you over the top. Murray is a solid QB b/c he can hurt you with his legs and his arm. He's got a lot of experience and is finally looking like the guy they'd hoped for this year. We need to put a stop to their 3 headed rushing attack, which plays to the strengths of guys like: McCullers, AJ Johnson, and Herman Lathers. Also Brewer at safety is certain packages will allow us to have another big LB type body in there to help against the run.

2. It looks like we will continue to have to move Waggner around from corner to safety in certain packages again with Randolph's injury. He is a good FS option and obviously his coverage skills are good, but it means we will have to play BOTH Coleman and Teague at the same time, so they will have to play well for us to not get beat like we did several times last year in this game... I will say Murray's biggest weakness is his lack of accuracy on his deep ball, so hopefully he will continue to struggle in that area.

3. In the first half against Akron we played very base defense, but still struggled with our alignments at times which bothered me... Hopefully it is b/c we were looking ahead to this game and scheming for UGA. I hope Sal can dial up some good disguises in the back end and create pressure to put on Murray early to get him rattled and out of rhythm.

4. We have to win the turnover battle if we want to have a chance to win Saturday plain and simple. We've been doing a solid job creating turnovers on defense, but Saturday we will need some guys to step up big and make plays when we have our chances.

5. Our linebackers will be tested in this one. Not only do they have to stop a great rushing offensive threat. They have to be able to keep contain on Murray if he decides to take off and run, they have to be aware of situation where UGA will go play action so that they don't get sucked in and allow WR to exploit the space in between them and the secondary.

Overall this will be a tough test and we will see what our team is made of coming off of a tough loss and win against Florida and Akron respectively... I hope we play well and give UGA a good game. We will need to win BOTH the turnover battle and the Special Teams battle to have a good shot to win. Also not breaking down late in the 2nd half would be nice to see. I'm excited for the game this Saturday between the hedges and hope we can pull out a W

I'm hesitant to add this last part due to the scorning I could receive, but the reason Alabama is as good as they are isn't necessarily because they have superior talent all the time. (Their talent is as good as anyone in the country I'm not saying it's not) The main reason Alabama is so good is because they execute better than anyone in the country. They don't have stupid penalties or lapses in concentration which allows for big plays. They are able to focus and have 11 guys do their job and that's why they are able to be successful. We need to put an entire game together and execute our jobs in all phases of the game better and for 60 minutes.

Good read compared to what else has been on here. I agree I am excited and do think we have a shot to pull the upset if we have a few guys play really well.

Sticking with the vision thread for now but I appreciate the thought that went into this even if it was conscious.

I ain't scorning at ya about that last part.... I totally agree. If UT does what good teams (like Bama) do on a consistent basis we can have the same type of success they have had. At the level UT, Bama , UGa and mist of the rest of the league plays and recruits at, the talent gap isn't that great. The depth level may be as well as the disciine/ coaching but from a 1st string talent level we're capable of beating anyone we play, provided we do what you outlined....

I feel like a special teams play for the vols against UGA could be a difference maker. CP or Devrin take one to house??

I'll add that our team speed on defense isn't where it used to be as well.. I understand this staff is taking the approach Size over Speed similar to the way Alabama has built their defense, but our lack of elite speed on defense has been noticeable at times... The long plays by Florida were blown assignments I understand that, but they also out ran our entire defense on several occasions.

Our LB are all bigger, but they are all in the 4.6-4.8 range which hurts in man coverage assignments. Our secondary isn't slow by any means, but we don't have any blazers out there with the exception of maybe Coleman and Brewer. However both of those guys aren't playing as fast as they are right now b/c Coleman is still young and learning and Brewer is coming off of an ACL injury and need to come on. Luckily for us UGA doesn't have any Burners per say on offense, but even their WR can outrun the majority of our corners in 1on1 man coverage as they proved a year ago.

I agree with everything except the run defense...UGA last year had a spectacular all around defense, this year their pass defense has actually been the better of the two. I know they are missing Rambo, and they haven't played a good passing team yet; however their run defense has been suspect thus far...

I must admit that I haven't seem Missouri play but I assumed they had a good passing game. I assumed they would compare to us some in style of pass happy play??

Mizzou seems to have a lot of talent in the passing game, but Franklin seems to be unreliable in his health. And Mizzou lost the turnover battle in a big way...

How do you figure their run D has been suspect so far? They haven't allowed a 100 yard rusher all year. The official numbers are skewed b/c they've played teams where they've been able to put younger guys in the game and have given up some yards that the starters wouldn't have allowed, but rest assured this team can play against the run and a BIG reason why is #6 Jenkins in the middle.

They have had a similar schedule to us thus far...They have played two cupcakes and an average team and an SEC team albeit Vandy, but we have played the tougher schedule and had plenty of chances to get young guys in the game...I believe in 3 of their four games they have given up 150+ yards rushing and over 100 in all 4. Buffalo even put up 199 yards against them.

Jenkins in an incredible player and UGA has had a good defense the last year or so, but you can not say they have not given up their fair share of yards in the run game, check the stats...

I agree. I think the first half should be like a heavyweight fight for us-we have to keep punishing them with the run game. Hopefully we can have Neal and Lane pound it, mix in some wildcat to make their D lineman a bit more winded, and just stay close in the first half. We do that, then turn the big boys loose in the 2nd. I do not believe GA is that much better than us. I feel better about this game than I did FL. It just feels like it sets up well for us. Here's hoping!! :toast:

Good write up. I agree with most of that. However, I will say, the reason Alabama executes better than anyone in the country is because they have bigger faster players than anyone in the country. That makes it a little easier to execute. Yeah, they don't make a lot of mental mistakes I agree, but even when they do, it's not gonna be noticed as much as a team already struggling with lesser talent.

Obviously if we rush for 200+ yards that will be a huge help for us to win the game, but I was trying to be as rational as possible...

Hey Fred, where did you hear that Rambo would not be playing this Saturday? The last I heard was that his suspension was going to be lifted. Not doubting your info, just curious...

I have friends close to the program down there that have said he's going to be held out until next week... Also have read a few reports from UGA guys in Athens that have implied he won't be on the field. However, nothing is official obviously and he could very well be lining up at S on Saturday b/c it's a big game and he's their best player in the back end. I hope he isn't out there and everything I've heard and read suggests he won't be, but until game time I don't think anyone is going to know for sure...

I know it sounds like coach speak, but I think the main reason Bama executes well is because Saban has been on the "focus on the process, not the outcome" train for a while. He even has sports psychologists come in and teach the staff how to implement the “focus on the process, strategy”.

I’ve tried to follow it a bit and apparently many of the ideas came out of “golf psychology”. In golf the premise is to “pressure proof” your play by focusing on your pre-shot routine, the shot shape you want and not to worry about the outcome of the shot.

Translated to football it’s focusing on your pre-snap reads, making sure you are lined up correctly, communicating the assignments with your teammates. The idea being if on offense don’t put pressure on yourself to get a first down or on defense to hold on 3rd down. Feeling pressure is counter productive and leads to “trying too hard” to achieve an outcome.

As a player if you line up correctly, get your reads, play proper technique, the outcome will take care of itself. How many big plays has Tennessee given up because they didn’t do the fundamental things? They didn’t keep leverage on the corner, they didn’t play their assignment; or on offense they didn’t run the correct route, didn’t watch the ball into their hands, or didn’t block the correct man or pick up the blitzer?

In the course of a game against SEC competition you will get beat even when you have done everything right. The other team’s athletes will make plays because they are good. But by focusing on your assignments and techniques the number of plays they make and the size of those plays are minimized. That’s why you don’t see Bama giving up 70+ yard plays. Yes they have a lot of good athletes but they are as good as they are because you don’t see them out of position, arm tackling, or losing contain; they focus on the process.
