Thoughts from UGA fan

Jeremy said and I think it was before the game something along the lines that he feels he has talent on this team but several of them lack the confidence to be as good as they can be.
That confidence tends to show up the nanosecond after they are picked in the NFL draft for some weird reason.

I don't know if there's a single person on this board who thought we would look like Bama this year.

You are right. But there were quite a few who thought a UT team starting true FR DBs against a heisman QB and AA WRs would beat #17 WV.

Not mad at all and don’t take this kind of stuff too seriously, but feel the need to say something here.

With all due and sincere respect, the OP can piss off.

I can handle the ribbing and jokes. No problem, it’s what makes this fun.

But I guarantee we wouldn’t have rival fans starting threads like this if we were any good. This is thinly veiled condescension under the guise of “classy curiosity”. How about this OP, next time read the board and contribute in a thread instead of starting one that will say the same thing we’ve been saying all weekend? Why do this? This board is littered with threads showing all kinds of opinions on the team, coach, players, etc. You know this, but you also know GA will boat race us this year. This is borderline showing us the salt to throw on the wound before it is inflicted.

The worst part of this is we have had to endure this nonsense because of the decade long incompetence of the leadership at the top. Not because UT doesn’t have equal to, and in some cases, more resources than our traditional conference peers. I don’t blame the OP, it is what it is. I’m sure rival fans love this. I would be relishing this if it were Bama, FLA, or GA.

I wouldn’t however, make threads like this on their board.

I really really like CJP and hope he can turn this around. Not only for us fans, but so we can get past this era of every other fan patting us on the head like the little engine that couldn’t.

I went back and read my OP. I can’t find a single word of “veiled condescension”. All I saw was college football talking points. While yours was filled with vile and anger. Can you just talk about football when you’re winning? I’ve been on this forum since 2008. I’m also on others as well. I’m a fan of college football. Read into it what you may. If you don’t have a valuable opinion on the subject, maybe just don’t read and respond.

Like I said, there are already a thousand threads on here filled with opinions on Pruitt and Tennessee. My opinions included. You can read and come to your own conclusion on what the consensus is. You can also respond in those threads. You literally didn’t say a single thing or ask a single question that hasn’t already been said a million times since Saturday afternoon.

A GA fan starting another thread asking the same *ing question and stating the same *ing things we’ve been saying all weekend doesn’t come across as genuine.

Maybe you didn’t mean it, but if GA was coming off of its worst home shutout against Tenn and poised to get throat stomped again you wouldn’t be over here starting threads. Let’s be honest, saying that you would out of college football talking points is disingenuous.

I don’t think they’re too worried about us. In a few years they’ll have 2 rings and we might make a post New Years bowl.
No sir, UGA will not, have not, and shall not win two rings before us. They're tied in the series with us for a reason....

Did this narrative that our guys lack self confidence and an innate knowledge they can win come from the coaches or AD?

Sorry, McDad, I missed this question yesterday. Just noticed it.

It comes directly from the players, and from their circumstance.

Put yourself in their shoes. For many of them, they just came off a season where they didn't beat a single SEC team. Even Kentucky beat them. Even Vandy beat them. And now, to start off the new season, they get beat 40-14. By 26 points. And there are teams on the cards in the weeks ahead who are as good as--a few of them better than--this team that just beat them by double digits.

The young men naturally have doubts about their prospects going forward. They are far from a place of confidence that they can beat just about everyone on the schedule. It would be unusual for them NOT to have doubts, given these circumstances.

None of this is a dig on our lads. I love them, and wish I could personally impart in them some confidence, some reassurance going forward. Real confidence, too; not just bravado. But the only folks who can do that are themselves, their teammates, and--most especially--their coaches. That's the leadership challenge.

Some things we fans don't have to wait for someone else to tell us. They're just common sense, if we think it through.

That's how I and others know this.

Take a look at their current roster and incoming recruits. If they don’t win two National Championships in the next few years it will be a total failure. No one in the East will be standing in their way.

Let’s agree to disagree. I generally don’t pour through sites looking for topics and posts. Especially when they’re not framed the way I would. I asked a direct question, gave my opinion on the first game, complete with compliments as well as criticisms, and politely waited for responses. If I my motives were as you described, my OP would have been much different.

If you took offense, maybe you’re a little sensitive. You’re the only person on the thread who read it the way you read it.

I’ve been here for 10 years. I think I’ve earned the right to be considered a CFB/SEC fan.

Another poster has claimed CJP shared the sentiment in a pregame in interview. I have no reason to doubt him.

But your 1000 yard psychological analysis without that interview is meaningless, here. It's a built in excuse attempting to explain the ineptitude we saw on Saturday.
It doesn't matter how many people agree with it. Many say we lack talent. Does that make it correct? You and CJP dont agree with that notion.

There are reasons why it looked as bad as it did. New scheme is a big part. Grier and his WR are (apparently) the collegiate version of 'The Greatest Show on Turf'. I hope those turn out to be true. I hope we see improvement. I hope recruiting improves our depth. I hope CJP develops into a championship HC. Time will tell.

Let me, as a PS, say unequivocally I am not saying CJP will fail. I have no animus against the man. His success means UTsuccess which is what we all want. I'm simply not buying hype and hope anymore. Im looking as objectively as I can at the product on the field. So far that product looked concerning.

There's no excuse in what I wrote, McDad. It was not an attempt to explain last Saturday. In fact, my first post in this thread wasn't about the past at all; not even the recent past. It was about the future, about the path ahead.

More specifically, about the leadership challenge facing Pruitt & Co.

But thanks for the passive aggressive phrasing: 1000-yard psychological analysis, indeed. It doesn't take a psychologist to understand how young men think, and to figure out what kind of leadership they're probably going to need. In fact, that was one of the key requirements of the job I did for two and a half decades in the Army.

Oh, and another correction: saying the lads need more confidence is NOT saying they have all the talent they need. I've said in other threads that I don't know whether we have a talent shortfall or not. The two are independent (though linked) variables.

No passive aggressiveness intended. And with all due respect, it is my understanding that you did not lead D1 athletes. You led military men.

There's really not a lot of difference between those two groups. All 18-24 year old men share a whole lot more of their mental make-up than differences. And those who are physically active, who depend on their physical skills in their job, they're even more alike.

There's a reason for all the frequent comparisons between soldiers and athletes--particularly football players (but other sports, too). And there's a reason General Douglas MacArthur said, "I need a man for a secret and dangerous mission. I want a West Point football player."

They're far more alike than they are different.

I agree to disagree. I do appreciate your reply to my earlier question. You tend to follow things more closely than I do. I was genuinely curious if "confidence" was an external or internal narrative.

Short answer: both.

Easy for you to say that, your dawgs are sitting pretty while we continue to decline year to year.
To be fair the DAWGS have declined for 38 years....When the recruiting violations start making there way to the surface the DAWGS will go get back in their crate again....

This is a thread of recycled excuses, I was hoping for at least some new ones.
1. Mars is in Oppositional alignment with Earth.
2. Black cleats mean slow feets.
3. MAGA: Mountaineers Are Great Again.
4. No turnover trashcan.

Any of these working for ya?
