I remember going to a game in high school before Bruce got here against Kentucky. My whole basketball team went. Long story short they gave us all free tickets in a good section as well. In those ugly cream colored seats. The one thing we should always thank Pearl for is bringing Tennessee basketball into the main stream. The arena is great now, and it’s a little harder to find free tickets.... Which is a good good thing GBO!!!!

Was this the game they handed out the orange plastic hard hats to fans? I remember going to one, but don't remember if it was this one or not. Seems like I also recall going to an NBA exhibition game there...maybe the Bullets with King against the Celtics?

I saw games at Stokley when it was only half finished and even before it was built, at Alumni. Pass the Geritol please.

Wow. I remember going through Freshman student orientation in Stokley in 1989.

I know the Bullets played the Bulls one year in an exhibition at TBA. I was there. 1991, perhaps. It may have happened more than once, but I specifically remember the one I went to.

I remember watching a Seattle Sonics game there. Can't remember the other team. I just remember Dale Ellis was a Sonic at the time

Like Pearl said when he came back a couple yrs back ... " the place is a palace". But honestly it looked very boring, even the creation of a committee in the early years. Those block walls behind benches we're prominant at first and looked bad at first. Still there but not seen as much somehow.

I don't know if it's possible w new building codes, but fans have always looked far separated from the court. As compared to the classic crazy fan venues.

The place is very attractive these days tho.
I
have wondered for a while now about "closeness" to the court. Don't think I have seen any newer arenas that seat fans "on top" of the court. Can anyone think of one??

I don't remember cream colored seats. I remember orange seats before they were replaced with black seats. But cream isn't really a color... hearing it makes me picture light brown.

TBA is an awesome venue. Always has been. But what Pearl got done made it among the best in the Country. It is built exactly like Rupp and the Dean Dome. When the fans didn't show up it came across as a bad venue. It was not. Bad hires....bad basketball.....bad fans. It was seen as to big and a coaching grave yard. Along came Bruce and now is is even more awesome. Until you go around the country and look at other venues keep your judgement.

Yeah, it was the prototype from the time. It's a great basketball arena... the people complaining about the exterior will always find something to whine about.

Or maybe...it's that it's because it's ugly. Being a great basketball arena has nothing to do with what it looks like on the outside. Rupp Arena is a great basketball arena as well and yet it's ugly as hell on the outside too.

And the irony that you're whining about the "whiners".

I have no complaints about the interior and I love the arena itself. It’s high class. But I don’t know how anyone can ignore how ugly the outside is.
