This years WR Room

I love Tennessee football, but the orange glasses and optimism for this team is laughable on this site. We will be lucky to make the playoffs, yet we seem to be loaded at every position here.
I would rather have orange glasses and optimism than your Catbone level, childish pessimism.

Mathews doesn't make tough catches and has way too many drops. Staley is solid, but not great. Jackson will get the other spot and has a long way to go before any NFL scout takes notice.
Other than Squirrel White (had no choice) this staff has never played a freshman any meaningful snaps.
Jackson & Smith were both playing in big games until they got hurt. Smith was injured vs Ga. Were those meaningful snaps?

Staley and Matthews were very good last season. Who’s going to be the replacement for Brazzell? It will probably take Keys a year to make an impact. Jackson maybe?
Jackson and Smith are both very talented. And make no mistake Keys will make an impact at some point this year. We are well equipped at WR. Actually with our OL Wide receiver and running game our freshman quarterbacks couldn’t ask for a much better situation to be able develop in. GBO

I hope so with Keys. So far it seems like it takes guys a year to really breakout in this offense. Unit should be good though.

Bet you consider the backfield of Charlie Garner, Aaron Hayden, and James Stewart just average too, uh?
I was in the first grade when they graduated. Were they All-World in their freshman and sophomore years? We only got one great year for each out of Brazzel, Hyatt, and Thornton Jr.

What are the odds that Matthews, Staley, and Key all have a year for the memories at the same time? Heck, I gave up on seeing an elite defensive line last year due to all the highly rated guys we were supposed to have..

They were good from the get go and got better each year. Garner was a JUCO signee and was great from the moment he took the field.

I’ve no idea how these guys will pan out but Matthews improved immensely last season and Staley has been better than expected IMO. Hopefully Keys is big time off the jump. Smith and others have major potential as well.

I watch every snap of every game. Unless Keys does something no other freshman WR has done under Heupel, there is no great WR on this team. The NFL scouts will not be drooling over our WR room this fall.
All these receivers have potential. I agree that Matthews had a lot of drops, but, both him and Staley were in their first year taking meaningful snaps. They’re all young and have potential to be great.

If we had Joey Aguilar at QB, I’d expect big seasons out of all 3. With a freshman QB, I doubt all three of them will surpass 600 yards on the season.

If you’re right this team will be fortunate to win 6 games.

FYI, I wanted Aguilar to return as much as anyone in 2026.
That’s what I’m afraid of. Fortunately we should see a tremendous improvement on defense and a noticeable improvement with the offensive line.

Last year we won games with an explosive pass attack. The year before it was all defensive line and run game. We never know what to expect out of Heupel. He always seems to have UT ready to compete for 10 wins though.

Every SEC and BIG 10 team have potential to be great by that logic.

After spring camp, Tennessee’s players have retreated home to get personal work in before returning to campus next week. For Staley, he’s staying sharp in his route running, which helped him have the productive year he did in 2025.

On Saturday, Staley’s dad, Brian Staley, posted a video of him during a summer workout looking sharp.
