This year's offensive team stats compared to 1998

Miraculous fumbles, missed field goals, whiffed/BS penalties, etc. that changed a game's outcome in favor of the Vols

1998: At least 3-4
2015: Probably -2

That and we had a better defense and defensive coaching staff.

Interesting but here's a couple of points; the game is completely different now than it was 17 years ago. And the biggest difference was left off, one team went undefeated.

The game hasn't changed, blocking and tackling!
I don't know the stat but would like to see missed tackles from 1998 compared to 2015. I'd say in the games we lost this year if we tackle better we win...

I agree. That is the biggest noticeable difference in the two offenses. Everything else is nearly identical. I wouldn't put as much blame on Dobbs as you, though. Dobbs isn't less accurate than Tee Martin was. I think the WR's were very disappointing this year. We didn't have a Peerless Price or a Cedric Wilson. Remember, yards per attempt includes yards after the catch as well. Peerless and Psycho Ced made many plays after the catch that year.

I do think some blame goes to the receivers. I also don't think CZA does a good job teaching proper technique. However Dobbs misses too many receivers he should hit when there are passing windows or the receiver does manage to get wide open.

Everyone always looks at offense... If they can't score they can't win. We throw at the feet of offensive players. That could be the new targeting rule or a coaching issue. Against OK if we tackle the qb 2 or 3 more times we win. Same against fl and bama.

....or it could be that what it takes to win these days is significantly more demanding that way it took to win in '98.

Yes, you have to have some luck in some games to win....

'98 - FG against Syracuse in the closing seconds (maybe more skill than luck but we were down and came back against 'cuse at their house)
'98 - UF missed their field goal in OT; Deon Grant had an incredible interception
'98 - Arky unbelievably fumbled

Needed some luck

'15 - against OK in the final 1.5 min
'15 - against UF in the final 1.5 min
' 15 - against UA in the final 2 min
