This Says It All..

Just to beat my drum again, it is the Nashville market. Great, blue chip guys grow like trees over there but they have no connection to the University. What we really need is road blocks blocking Clemson, UGA and Bama combined with some serious investment in that area.

If they don't wanna be a pert of it all I can say is-- bless their little pea pickin' hearts.

If I had a child who was good enough to play D1 football then I'd have to think hard if Tennessee is the right choice.

I felt that Butch squandered so much talent (AK just one example).

On the plus side, we did have 2 freshman CBs in the top 5 last year.

Maybe Pruitt will start developing talent.

From Rivals Sports article:

"Tennessee has a lot of tradition and history and a great game-day environment, but the kids in the state seem to want out until the Vols can prove they’re a winner".
I wouldn't agree that "says it all" unless you strictly want to look at the negative. UT presently has 2 of the top 5 players in the state with a 3rd being a heavy lean to UT ( according to 247 Sports). Plus UT is in on several other top instate players. That's about the norm for UT reven in the 90's when UT could take pretty much whoever they wanted in-state. The players UT recruits should address their needs instead of the Jones model of recruiting players that has the most stars but would not address needs.

We used to be the only show in the state. That all changed when the Oilers moved to Nashville. No coincidence that’s exactly when our decline started.

CJP and staff have a great rapport with TN High School coaches that, IMHO, will help UT sign highly rated players more frequently than his predecessors..Doofus refused to establish any relationships with the coaches/schools which made/makes it more difficult to get TN kids to stay in-state with UT..I agree that wins will help but I don't think kids are willing to become a Vol only if UT is winning......

That is the "catch-22" view of recruiting.

Doesn't really say alot actually. Most coaches have had pretty good in state success. Sure we miss out on a few but they will always happen.

That's not what Keshawn Lawrence said. Or Eric Gray last year. Grimes could still come on board too ... just more negative press.
Start winning and this will take care of itself .. folks wanna be close to home/family. Not worried bout recruiting this state. Nashville is still Vol country and we have plenty of talent here alone.

Interesting point .. except they moved here in 97 and vols won NC in 98 so there's that. Would hate to think that the titans being here would be hurting my Vols there ... still a interesting coincidence with the timing of vols decline

One major factor is the media's obsession with the titans. Prior to them relocating to Nashville, most of the "attention" went to the Vols and college football. Now, you can't find any meaningful Vols chatter on radio sports talk, tv or anywhere else. What little there is seems to be slanted negatively. I think this has a negative impact on popularity and recruiting, especially for the large number of people relocating to the mid-state area from other parts of the country.

Instead of saying its a coincidence, could someone actually explain the cause / effect of this notion?

UT will never pull the high end recruits out of Memphis. Just too far removed from Knoxville to be of interest and too many closer options for recruits.

That being said, winning and a shot at making the NFL matters a lot more than anything else to these kids and I don't blame them for leaving for greener pastures. Those are two things in very short supply in Knoxville the last decade.

They were in Memphis in 97 and nobody cared at that time. Some of those games only drew 18,000 fans.

I will always remember the kid from Nashville that left and went to USC. Can't remember his name but he was a receiver. I'm thinking this was around 05/06. Can't remember either why Fulmer wasn't able to pull him.

Anyone remember this?

Patrick Turner. That was when USC was pulling everyone and probably offering top dollar
