This is why last night was so bad

I understand the disappointment with this game but I've watched UT do this in certain games. I don't know why but we usually have one or two games like this. Even during the 90's we laid some eggs.

I know it causes people to want to throw things and it's hard on my ulcer. But, it is what it is. And, I'm hoping this isn't a sign for things to come.

I have to believe we'll see a completely different team next Saturday. And, I hope the coaches and the players use this stinker for motivation.

The press, the national coverage. All of it affects recruiting, rank voting, bowl opportunities, it affects much more than one bad game.

It spawns articles like this. https://news.google.com/news/ampvie...alachian-state-win-090116.amp.html#pt0-689128

Many more, plus TV highlights. That's the repercussions that no one is talking about.
There are flaws in your logic. If this game were to actually matter then that means UT did something great this season. We won. It's over. Judge after the first 4 games. This past game could be forgotten very easily.

Uh no. No one remembers a bad week 1 win. This is ridiculous thinking this is a problem.

Totally, most people don't even remember early losses let alone an ugly win. Look at the number of 1-Loss teams that went on to good bowls after dropping an early game to an inferior opponent. Then look at the undefeated teams who dropped one late in the season only to get jumped in the rankings by the guy who lost it earlier.

In 2012 we lost to FL, GA, MSST, AL, SC, MO, & VD
In 2013 we lost to FL, GA, AU, AL, MO, & VD
In 2014 we lost to FL, GA, OM, AL, & MO
In 2015 we lost to FL, AR, & AL

The list of SEC losses has been consistently going down. I'm up for giving her one more chance to see if she can get FL off that list in 2016. :)

Oh we've for sure gotten better over BJ. I'm not saying that. But do you honestly believe we will ever be the best in the country and win a NC with the same game plan. The game plan of run up the gut when our line can't create openings/or not get trampled by guys that are smaller, and then throwing a slant pass behind the line of scrimmage?

And correct me if I'm wrong but isn't the ultimate goal in sport to be the best? So that's what I judge on. I know it takes time. But also they have to realize change has to occur.

I think passing game problems rest on lack of confidence from the staff, which comes from inconsistency of our QB. So they take the approach of hoping that his experience will limit mistakes, get lucky from time to time, and let the defense win the game. Now I now Denver just did that, but let's not mistaken that as blue print the greatness. I do believe a great portion of winning success falls on defense, but you need to have some sort of offense especially when you have this much talent.

Lastly, but tried into all that, we have the same coaching problems that will likely creep back in.

OVERALL I believe the team will rebound and have another decent season. They did it last year aswell. But I'm sorry if I feel like they are capable of much more. Esp in a season like we have lined up, with new coaches scattered all over and a relatively better schedule compared to recent years.

Oh I 100% agree. As I said in my post, I'm far from convinced that was a fluke. I'm just saying that come season's end, the fact that it took OT to beat Appalachian State is basically going to have zero influence on this team's national perception.

In fact, if this turns into 2005, beating at 10 win team might be one of the season's high marks.

As someone mentioned in another post, we won the first game against Syracuse in 1998 by one point in the final seconds yet went on to win the National Championship. That can happen again and even then it took a fluke late Arkansas fumble & a push from our big O-line to cause it to get us that win, otherwise, no NC. We certainly have a long ways to go & it's possible but it's a long season; if we don't play better it will be a longer season.

Unfortunately some of these mistakes were ones made in the past; mistakes made by veterans thought to have progressed past such mistakes. Coaches thought to have learned from poor play calling in the past. Hopefully everyone just got a big head and this game brought them back down to earth. Hopefully....otherwise this team will be fortunate to win 8 games

Still say App State is much better than people giving them credit; they had as many returning starters as we did, and their only losses were to Clemson and one other last year. Hmmm, Clemson was in the NC last year weren't they? Sutton's early KO fumble and their early TD put us in a hole to begin with which gave them confidence. You don't want to give a team like that early confidence but hey mistakes happen. Fortunately we were able to overcome; luckily I would add. I still think our play-calling sucks.

Well, I think we survived a meltdown that very much had to do with the amount of hype surrounding this team. The momentum shift to App State in the beginning of the game was much more demoralizing than usual because this team felt the burden that they were expected to be perfect. Once one thing didn't go there way, the confidence was gone and fear crept in.

I'll take a negative article about a win all day. I wasn't impressed with the performance, but I can't remember the last time UT played that poorly and won. They need to fix some things. Hopefully they do and quick.

It wasn't that long ago when the teams we put out there would never had come back and won that game. This team didn't roll over. That's something at least.

I wouldn't heap too much praise on our team. Yes, credit for fighting back but we would have still got beaten if (1) App State's kicker made either one of those two kicks or (2) Hurd hadn't fell on Dobbs fumble in the endzone. I'm pretty sure none of that was in the game plan.

Many considered the battle of Bristol the true opener. Why? Because of the early big match ups with the other teams. Bama/USC, Au/Ckemson, Ole Miss/Florida state, A&M / UCLA, Florida/ Mass

The hype for next week has been huge. App state was seen as a scrimmage. Hopefully the wake up call was heard.

Unfortunately this has to give Virginia Tech confidence going into the game but I certainly hope their D line can't push our O line around like App State did.

Yeah, I'd have to agree with you.

The part that baffles me about all of this is thatsome are acting like we lost to a TERRIBLE team. We did not execute very well on offense all night and that was obvious. However, half of the fans have called for us to lose to Texas A&M this year (the team ranked in the USA Today poll BEHIND App state). We lost one lineman from last year's team and I assure you we didn't forget how to block.
