On that note, why do we have a Davey Crockett looking mascot? Never understood that one(well, except for the fact that Davy Crockett was born in Tennessee and was a US Congressman from Tennessee). The Volunteer nickname comes from the Mexican War, so shouldn't that dude wear the Dragoon uniform, like the color guard? I think that change would put us back in the elite of college football.

I would like to see Mike Slive fired personally. I read an article where he claimed that he could get 16 teams in SEC in 15 min. If this is so, then why hasn't it been done? It looks the SEC is going to run out of quality teams to get, with all the pending realignments coming.

I really think the source of all our bad luck is that terrible gameday intro song. "We're coming, we're sheetay!!!! We've had crap for luck every since they started playing that abortion of a song.

Mike Slive is running a goldmine in the SEC...it would be ignorant to fire him. He's the best in his field.

The only reason the SEC is know as the top football conference is because the freaking teams are good! This in spite of the idiot known as Mike Slive!

I'm 1000% positive that the SEC would still be what it is without him.

He volunteered to fight for Texas and died at the Alamo . . . hence the association.

Not quite right. Volunteer state came from the War of 1812.

Really? Not what it says on the UTK webpage. . .

The University of Tennessee: Tennessee Traditions

Volunteer Nickname

Since the Revolutionary War, Tennesseans have been quick to volunteer for military duty. That reputation was solidified during the Mexican War when Gov. Aaron Brown issued a call in May 1846 requesting 2,800 volunteers for military service and 30,000 responded. A UT athletic team was dubbed the Volunteers for the first time in 1902 by the Atlanta Constitution following a Tennessee-Georgia Tech football game. The Knoxville Journal and Tribune did not use the name until 1905. By the fall of 1905 both the Journal and the Knoxville Sentinel were using the nickname. The name "Volunteers" is frequently shortened to "Vols" in describing Tennessee's athletic teams. The dragoon uniform worn by Tennessee regulars during the Mexican War is worn by the color guard at UT Knoxville athletic events.

By the way, this was a question on the Army ROTC Ranger Board, so it was kind of drilled into us. I saw the reference that you cite on wikipedia also and knew it was wrong. Don't believe everything you read on the internets.

Mike Hamilton inherited a top Athletic Department, look what he did with it. Take a look at what Slive has accomplished and what the SEC is now compared to before he took over. Be honest and look at the results, the SEC has grown to a ridiculous power in collegiate athletics.

Take your biases out of it (whatever they may be), Slive has turned something great in to something legendary.

He'll be running the NCAA before you know it.

Lastly, if you truly think Mike Slive is an "idiot", I feel sorry for you and your family...you haven't the slightest clue of true intelligence.

Smokey was in an incident with an Alabama player in 2006 when he tried to bite a Crimson Tide player during warm-ups.

Final score of that game: Tenn 16 Bama 13

We have not beaten Bama since. Seriously. What's up with that? I'm not ready to throw in the towel yet but 1-2 more years and it may be time for us to start looking around.
