This is what we have been SUPPOSED to do for years.

He didn't lead that offense anymore than JG did when he was on campus. It's painful, but it's true. I'm sure he's a nice guy, I'm sure the guys on the team love him, just like they did JG, but it's more likely that things only get worse as the level of competition increases, than the opposite.

He's not some freshman with a massive ceiling of possible improvement ahead of him, but a junior with 3 seasons of training, and 13 games under his belt. His ceiling is far closer to his actual game-day performance than you care to acknowledge.
You nailed my biggest fear. Milton isn't fresh out of HS.

This is how big time D.1 programs begin their seasons. Whoop up on a cupcake to work the kinks out. And we did......Georgia State anyone?

You thought this is how it's done??? Play a lame QB for 3.5 quarters and put in a lamer backup? We'll do good to win 4 games this year, that's NOT how BIG TIME D1 programs do it. But Tennessee hasn't been a big time program for 14 years.

Fellas, chill out. It was a decisive opening game win. Lot to work on? Yes, that is always the case after first game. Worry on passing attack? Warranted. But the big take always for me were that the OL played really well, opened running lanes, gave Milton ungodly time in pocket (that’s another worry, he had so much time and threw for less than a buck fifty), RBs look awesome. It’s a decent first step. Chill all

There were positives and negatives tonight. Probably unwise to extrapolate anything either way. Let’s get ready for next week and get behind our guys. They played hard tonight and that’s really all I ask

You never show all of your cards the first game vs an inferior opponent. Spread was 35, we won by 32. New staff, new team, new system. I’m happy with the win. On to Pitt.

I don’t think it would be close at all. Georgia State wasn’t great but they were a decent team, went to a bowl game that year. BG is one the worst teams in college football.
How do you know BG is one of the worst? The season just started. Their QB looks decent. They’re not a good team by any stretch but just because magazines say they’re one of the bottom 5 teams in the country doesn’t mean that’s where they’ll end up.

I enjoyed your post, but you need to stop trying to make “bigly” happen. It’s not going to happen, Gretchen!

Sorry, I’m probably legally drunk.

That’s a “no” on bigly. Hard no.
I’m just glad you weren’t so drunk you typed “on” instead of “no” there at the end.

A straw man argument? We put up 38 points once last season, won three games. Do we have a Heisman QB? No. But we lose and everyone complains, we win and everyone complains. Listen to what coach said after the game. We have a lot to fix, but be happy for a win.
Some posters would complain if we had scored that dropped TD that we should’ve had 50 instead

Georgia St would have beat this BG team by 17.

The build up Georgia State argument is not a winner and that was Pruitt’s second year with a much more talented squad. They also laid an egg against an average at best BYU team the next week

Not sure what you are wanting me to acknowledge. I never claimed that he is the next Joe Burrow. Maybe he gets better, maybe he doesn't. But he is the guy behind center, so I hope he does. We won, I'm happy.

My prediction before the game was 40-20 UT. So we did better than that. Those picking UT to score 70 were delusional. I’m thinking the Pitt game will be like a 28-27, 27-24 type game

He's not some raw freshman with talent who just need to be moulded, he's a junior transfer in his fourth year of being in a college football program. His runway for improvement is short at this point in his career.

Agree, Heupel is not going to change what he is.

Again, never said he was. He might be sitting the bench by game 4. My original comment was based on the fact that there was never a question that we weren't in control of that game last night. We won by over 30 points. Shut out the team in the second half. But a lot of people act like we won 13-10 in double over time. That's my complaint.

It was 14-6 with less than 5 minutes to go in the 3rd quarter before we went back to the running game, and our starting QB only managed to throw 2 TDs, one of which, was essentially a poorly thrown 'Hail Mary' that would have been picked off by nearly any other team.

No one is complaining about the fact that we won. People are complaining because Bowling Green is a very bad team, and we performed pretty poorly for more of the game than we didn't.

And yet we still pulled out a win. The team will break my heart later on in the season. I'll enjoy the wins as they happen.

We didn’t throw for a lot of yards, but we didn’t even have to. We established our ground game and churned out the win. The pass game was rough but you use these games to tweak the areas you need to improve. It’s clear they wanted Milton to avoid running too much and to work on his deep throws, which steadily got better throughout the game.

Defense was bend-but-not-break, allowing only 2 FGs and no TDs. Even against a bad team that is encouraging, as we had a way of letting bad teams score a lot in previous seasons.

This was a B-/C+ game from the Vols, and I look for improvement next game.
