to his players. He discussed at SEC media days how part of his plan is to get players who wear the uniform to grasp what it has always meant to people in the past who put on the orange jersey.

This is a good example of one of those. I like this short piece. Elwood Powers and his family, who had lived in Spokane since 1945, was still proud of the roots he had as a Vol. When he died the church was decorated in orange and white flowers. VFL.

Elwood Powers, who played basketball for Vols, dies at 92 GoVolsXtra

Fulmer always used to say, “Take a lot of pride in those orange jerseys, guys.” The implicit corollary to that statement was that those distinctive orange jerseys were the war regalia of generations of Tennessee players who went before them and established the program which they now represent. I presume that I will get a lot of flack for this opinion but players who beg for black jerseys convey the impression, symbolically if not overtly, that they don’t care about Tennessee tradition or their predecessors who made Tennessee the proud program that it has been historically.

Some of these players think they are bigger than the program or totally resent the proud tradition of the program. This is it is all about me generation and they need to understand that they are slowly loosing a fan base.

Really?let me see if can get this straight. Cause of players wanting to wear jerseys, your saying they don't care about tennessee traditions or anything like that, well prolly over half of them came here cause of the tradition... Some of you people need to get a grip in things, and stop grasping and saying stupid stuff like this.... Wow..

There is no way in hell the players who want new uniforms "care less" about volunteer tradition. That is quite possibly one of the most ignorant posts I have ever read.

Programs evolve. They change. Uniforms don't make the players or the traditions....THE PLAYERS DO! The tradition is still there, the rich football heritage is still there. It won't be lost simply because of a uniform change. These kids came to Tennessee because of our tradition and they want to be a part of a continuing legacy that is BIG ORANGE football. If new uniforms help pump up the team and get them excited and motivated then get them some by god new uniforms...the atmosphere was ELECTRIC when they came out in black and laid a beatdown on SCjr 2 years ago...go tell Eric Berry and the rest of the guys on that team that they don't care about UT tradition and I promise they will set you strait on the issue....

Well said brother! Some people need to get a grip and climb out from under the rock they have been living under. Players not caring about tradition just because they want to tweak the uniforms for a few games, is a ridiculous statement. WOW!

Maybe not the most ignorant but definitely one of the most misguided posts I've ever read. I don't understand that logic at all. Just because they "want" to wear a black jersey on Halloween they don't care about UT tradition? That's pretty ridiculous, sir.

Since I started this thread, I would just like to say a couple things. I don't think wearing a different jersey combination once in awhile is against tradition. As a matter of fact, our first jerseys were black...so that argument is not feasible at all. Also, some of our traditions are fairly new to many Vol fans.

As far as tradition goes, a new family at their first Christmas has to start new traditions as a family and their traditions are as legitimate as any family that have been doing their own for 40 years. How else can they start traditions?

A lot of the traditions of Tennessee football that many people think are old are not old to me and many other Vol fans. Doug Dickey came here from Florida and put the power T on the helmets, running through the T and checkerboard endzones. The band didn't always march to the stadium. We didn't have a Vol Walk when football started at Tennessee. Rocky Top wasn't written in 1939. If traditions were stagnant we would still be playing in front of a few thousand fans at Shields-Watkins field with an electric clock on the hill, bleachers and black jerseys; and the coach would be a cardboard cutout of General Neyland after his passing.

I think the two posters who have some kind of thing about black jerseys in particular should maybe just think about it for a little while.

Thanks to the OP for sharing such a great story about a true VFL.

Sometimes it takes a few examples to help the youngsters understand.

I sure didn't know what UT meant when I first went up there.

Thought I did though.

GBO!

They need to win some games, don't talk about changing unis until you prove you can earn the right to wear it. Don't want to hear any of that, " it will motivate us to play better", "make us more excited about playing", " attract more top recruits" hogwash!

Eric Berry and Montario Hardesty are the two who went directly to Hammy asking for it. Is there anyone on this planet that would question the dedication and loyalty of those two?
Black IS one of the official university colors and jerseys of many years past were black. The USC game was a charge to UT fans and players, not to mention the gamecock butt kicking.
Black, black throwback, or other throwbacks are all welcome to me a lifelong Vol fan. Nobody at UT is being disrespected. Me thinks the whole problem is just in some people's heads.
