To be fair (knowing when a poster goes there it isn't going to happen), this thread was started in response to a #21 recruiting class on Rivals. Nearly 100 programs in America would like that class. But they are not us was the premise. Well, that premise was wrong. At that time UT had become a laughingstock, a shadow of what it had been. So the thread started under a false assumption that the program was still worthy, but had hired a new coaching staff that was not.
It's easy to attack in retrospect. Although I disagree with the premise that a #21 class is poor recruiting when the program had just tanked to its lowest ebb in history, the rest of oregonvol's post still stands. This staff has not proven it can win big at this level. Butch is 12-13 at UT. The defensive staff is doing the better job by far and the team performance rankings prove it. Until the coaching staff wins at a high level the main thing will remain unanswered. We want to believe Butch can get it done - he is a strong salesman for UT. The great recruiting is building a great roster.
The evidence says his offense finished #90 in total offense last season. So when faced with an opportunity to make an OC hire, Butch makes a less sexy, comfortable hire for him. Gutsy call, but will it be the right call? You cannot call an OC that has never been a QB coach your QB coach and expect most folks to buy it no matter what Tom Brady says. Brady was only a part-time starter his senior season at UM. He became Brady under the Patriots tutelege. We all know Sheridan will be the QB coach as a GA if we are honest about it. DeBord will be the asst. O-line coach and OC. Will see if it works. But the jury is still out on the issue.
