2.7 seconds big differenceA QB should have an expectation of getting 3 seconds to pass. We did not give him that. On the strip sacks he had two hands on the ball, nothing he could do. People should be angry with the play of our tackles not QB. The rush didn’t come from the middle it was all outside. The guards seemed to hold up in protection. Although no one gave us a push in the run game. We have to speed our tackles up. I don't Think JG held the ball too long on any of the strip sacks. He made some mistakes but most of you are putting your blame on the wrong person. Ask anyone who played or coached football. They will tell you the same. To many people on here think they know a lot about “team” football and how it works together and they really know just enough to go blaming wrong people. It’s easy to do from the couch!
It came between the Left Tackle and Guard seems like, had his back to it no matter, Chandler wiffed on the block, what bugs me is that he should have known its coming, on a play where you know theres a blitz coming you would think he is trying to get rid of the ball just a little quicker, the sense of urgency you mentioned. He had time to get rid If the ball on the last sack. The blitz came from the opposite side of where JG set up in the pocket. Good Qb’s have a sense of when to throw before the pressure arrives. That may be JG’s #1 flaw.
I agree with the sentiment of your post and hate the way some our fans seem to enjoy crucifying our QB. But I think his inability to consistently throw the ball accurately was our biggest problem vs Georgia. Go back and watch the tape and see how badly Georgia loaded the box, the defense is only able to do that when they don’t respect the passing gameA QB should have an expectation of getting 3 seconds to pass. The thing about Josh Dobbs was if he had a head of steam once he got past the line of scrimmage he was like having another running back on the loose. It wasn't all JG's fault, but he still played terribly. I wouldn't say he was the "weakest link" on the offense, but he was far from the strongest.
The biggest thing that concerns me is he just doesn't seem to read the defense well. You hardly ever see him audible out of a play and Georgia's D-line seemed to know exactly what we were going to do on a lot of plays before the plays even happened.
It's also frustrating that he's as slow as molasses. He doesn't process anything quickly. It'll be obvious there's a guy that's coming after him and he has 3 seconds to react and it's like he still hasn't decided what to do by the time the guy gets there. (And that has happened on a lot of the fumble and near-fumble plays this season.)
And while I don't know if this is JG's fault of the coaches' fault, why are we the only team that seems to have no counter to a blitz?
I've defended JG, particularly back in '18, when he played behind a horrible O-line. But it just feels like he's hit his ceiling. He may still be the best QB on the roster ... at this moment. And if he is, the coaches should still start him. But it's so frustrating watching him play against good teams, because it seems obvious he's never going to beat them. He can beat Kentucky and South Carolina and Mizzou. He's not going to beat the Georgias, Floridas, and Alabamas of the world.
He's almost like the anti-Josh Dobbs. He's a better pure pocket passer than Dobbs, and can make a lot of throws that Dobbs couldn't, but Dobbs had superb instincts and an excellent feel for the game, while JG's instincts and feel for the game are lacking.
But the bottom line is that if JG gets us to 6-4 and another QB only gets us to 5-5, you have to play JG, as frustrating as it is.
No QB in college football expects 3 seconds to pass. JG avg'd 2.39 seconds per throw vs UGA. The SEC average in week 3 was 2.29 seconds. Bennett reads D's and makes decisions faster than JG. He averaged 2.06 seconds per throw. Even when Cut came back and repaired Ainge's broken psyche... he spent considerable time training him to have a 2.5 second clock in his head.A QB should have an expectation of getting 3 seconds to pass. We did not give him that.
You mean except for feel pressure, move in the pocket, make faster reads, get the ball off on time, throw the ball away rather than holding it, and keeping the ball high like he's been taught since stepping on campus, right? On the strip sacks he had two hands on the ball, nothing he could do.
You might want to watch again. The blitzes were the key. Most of the ones I saw came right up the middle. They just knew that JG couldn't react mentally fast enough to make them pay. He never has.People should be angry with the play of our tackles not QB. The rush didn’t come from the middle it was all outside.
UGA did not respect JG's ability to hurt them over the top or with quick reads. They blitzed pretty much whenever they wanted to. They crashed down to stop the run all day. You MUST have a QB that can take advantage of what UGA did to stop UT's run game... and JG isn't that guy.The guards seemed to hold up in protection. Although no one gave us a push in the run game.
The OL played poorly at times. They did. They were playing against the most talented front 7 in college football. They had breakdowns. They were also handicapped by JG.We have to speed our tackles up.
Good QB's manage their pocket. They move around... even Bray did that and he had concrete cleats. JG is a stationary target.I don't Think JG held the ball too long on any of the strip sacks.
There's plenty of "blame" to share but when your QB shows the same inabilities for 4 years... and a D as well coached and talented as UGA's recognizes and gameplans for it.... you get blown out.He made some mistakes but most of you are putting your blame on the wrong person.
Right. Like you blaming everyone BUT the guy who has been the common denominator for 4 years now in some of the most anemic O's UT has ever fielded.Ask anyone who played or coached football. They will tell you the same. To many people on here think they know a lot about “team” football and how it works together and they really know just enough to go blaming wrong people. I guess you’re right. Keep starting JG. Thanks for the pep talk.I am going to do a little drive by analysis . These are blatant errors by JG . It is obvious that he has no clue what is happening in his pre-snap read. It could be the case that he has not been give the ability to make pre-snap changes and audible. I cant imagine a Chaney offense not allowing this , but I will let you decide. These errors by JG make the offensive line look horrible . They make the receivers look horrible . They are enough to cause game melt downs . JG has several over aching issues to feed into each of the failures noted below. He holds the ball to long. He stars down receivers. He has no pocket awareness. There were mistakes all around . The tackles looked like they were getting boat raced. But if the blitzes were picked up pre-snap and / or JG slid forward in the pocket and delivered before 3 seconds , 80% of the o-lines bust would not have been busts at all. When you play teams like UGA , somebody is going to get beat at some point in the game. That is just football. So when you look at the greats like Manning or Brady or any other great , they make you pay for blitzing and it starts pre-snap. They make running backs look great by getting them in the right play at the right time.
6.38 1st quarter
safety drops to the box making 7 in the box , obvious pre snap blitz. Man coverage . JG has to check to a hot route . Rather, he does nothing and hands off running right to the teeth of the defense.
5.18 1st
GA line shifts right . This creates a free rusher on the right side. GA has 6 in the box . This is first and 10 . QB should check to run strong side away from the free rusher. Rather JG snaps with 22 seconds on the play clock . He must scramble to get back to the LOS.
GA has 6 in the box , they blitz a safety making it 7 creating an overload in the box on the left . Pre-snap it is known there will be an unblocked rusher. JG snaps the ball with 29 seconds on the play clock . Its second and 8 and all routes are set deep . The back should have been checked hot and leaked out for easy pitch and catch. He would have gotten 8 yards.
Instead JG barely makes it back to the LOS
4.40 2nd pass rush from defensive ends . JG drops drops drops ...never stepping up into the pocket. He holds the ball for 4 seconds. Running back is open . Instead JG calls his own number in a panic run and barely gets back to the LOS . He runs directly toward the open RB but is staring down field and does not see him. A good QB steps up in the pocket and delivers .
3rd quarter fumble. 4 man pass rush . JG has to step up into the pocket , rather he back peddles and then decides to Scramble left and is caught from behind. Mid route is open . Again a good QB steps into the pocket and hits the middle route ( see diagram ) . He hits this on time at the 2.5 to 3 second mark. .
3 quarter overload blitz. 2 receivers left uncovered . This is a tricky blitz that is not visible pre-snap. JG throws INT . Delivers on time to the back there is a one on one with back and safety in the open field. This is probably a good throw away down .
3-8 , double LB blitz .14.34 4th . Had to be suspected pre-snap as there is a single high safety and man coverage across the board. A decent pre-snap read is that that two LBs have a job and are not going to be standing there on 3rd and 8 with nothing to do. He needs a 2 second release at the marker ( again , he should know the heat is coming in this obvious down and distance ) , in stead we get nearly a 4 second release
3/5 10:07 4th . Same as above . fumble GA touchdown
This game is different with better pre-snap reads and better QB fundamentals .
He played a perfect first half. You will not complete every dropback. Sorry that is just football. You are nitpicking .I am going to do a little drive by analysis . These are blatant errors by JG . If you break down that it was 3rd quarter, whatever down and distance you can get the int play time from that site.....has for the other call it made up but a timer from hands to sack was 2.68. But we can dismiss that. Its fine...you will anywaySo you made up the times? Of course
I see time for the whole game but not individual plays.
Other then those 2 lucky TD passes he was a check down king...without those 2 pass he has at 5.5 YPAHe played a perfect first half. You will not complete every dropback. Sorry that is just football. You are nitpicking .
Second half the line played like crap but he should have held on to the ball better.
