This IS NOT a must win

Totally agree.

That said, I do think we have the talent to win. Thought we played better than the score showed last year. We have a better situation offensively. They have more vulnerability on the O-line. And there's a legit argument that playing Bowling Green in Week #1 was a big benefit for us since it allowed our defense to get experience against an Air Raid style offense already.

I see this as a coin flip type of game, but I'd love to see us pull a 2006-vs-Cal on them!

I really hate scared fans. YOU CAN'T BE SCARED TO FAIL. These sort of threads show a lack of confidence. That sort of vibe can get to players. I hope you're not at Neyland. We need everyone to be 100% behind the team at all times. We don't need folks like you who are ready to quit on the game before its even played.

Agree 100%.

Just like playing Bama, we don't have the horses to compete with OU for 4 qrs. I expect us to be tied at half time then get tired and start slipping away. As long as we don't get blown out, I'm content. Y'all don't freak out.

41-30 OU

Since you know how everything will play out, how about you don't watch the game or show up in the official thread.

We've recruited ALOT better than them the last 2 years. They went 8-5 last year. We went 7-6. They lost alot of guys to the draft. We lost no one of significance. You can make alot of excuses for why we should lose to oklahoma. Inexperience. Injuries. Moment too big. Lack of talent IS NOT ONE OF THEM. This team has loads of talent. Arguably top 10 type talent.

And we've replaced AJ with whom? However, we have definitely upgraded in many other areas.

Gotta take care of the ball and not give them a short field.
We've done a pretty good job of that so far. Still say I'm more concerned about short passes from them. VOLS by 14!:dance2:

Sorry OP, but a loss here sends us back into Unrankedville where we've been for years now. It also stops the hype train dead in its tracks and shakes up an extremely confident UT team.

Granted we can still win the East with a loss here, but Booger McFarland said it best the other day. He said "Tennessee needs to win this game, they need to be back. If not now, then when?"

If this isn't a must-win, then it's as close to a must-win as you can possibly get.

I don't want to go back to unrankedville

Sorry OP, but I disagree with everything you just posted.:dunno:

He is not wrong in the literal sense but I agree that the importance of this game can't be overstated. This is the biggest moment of Butch Jones' career, hands down. It is an evenly matched game with a solid opponent. His coaching ability is going to show in this game. Last year that game was UF and the staff wet the bed. The team NEEDS a solid showing tonight, even in a loss.

This is a stupid post.

I'm just a regular fan that loves my Vols who thinks OU is a little better. If players are getting vibes from a random fan on a message board, then we are ****ed anyways.

Why are you giving them the edge? Is it mostly their offensive attack or our lack of passing game?

I think our game will look like this. TN - florida. OK - east carolina

It is a must win in the fact that we need the confidence the win will give in order to break the tons of losing streaks we need broken this year.

But no an OOC loss will not ruin our chances at being a contender for the east other than that.

I sure hope the OP isn't giving the pre-game speech.

Sorry, but I think it is. At least in one sense. Eventually you have to turn the corner. Great coaches cant be one dimensional, such as recruiting (Ron Zook) the great ones figurr out how to win, even when all the variables arent in their favor. There is no perfect roster. College teams are constantly in flux with injury, graduation.

No single game is must-win. No, not even Florida (sorry, KB). We can reach our primary goals, championships, with an L in any spot on the calendar. We don't want to, of course. But we could.

Every single game is important. That's part of the elegant beauty of college football today. Unlike basketball, and NHL hockey, and pro football, every single game matters in the regular season. I like it this way.

We could rack and stack the 'relative importance' of OK vs. FL vs GA vs etc., but I feel no particular urge to do that.

Today, RIGHT NOW, this game is the most important game. It's the one to care about most. It's the one to get hot about most. It's the one to shout about most. Live in the RIGHT NOW. Let's beat their asses.

Go Vols.

It's a big game and a game that could mean a lot, but this isn't a must win game. This is a tough out of conference game. If Tennessee loses, all their goals are in still in play. That's winning the SEC East and making a New Year's Six Bowl. Florida is a must win game IMO. Much bigger for the program and for the fans.

I feel like people are hyping this game too much. I want a very good showing and I want a win. But a lost is definitely not the end of the world. It's still way too early for must win games and a non conference game. Even if Tennessee loses 28-24 there is no reason to panic or get off the bandwagon.

I think Oklahoma wins. I think there is a little too much offensive talent right now for OU for Tennessee to handle. It wouldn't surprise me if Tennessee won however.

Three keys to the game:

1) Getting pressure on Mayfield.

2) Slowing down Joe Mixon and containing him.

3) Getting Joshua Dobbs in rhythm for the passing game.

In theory, I agree with you. In reality, my plan for a loss is to sip Drano and nibble away on a bunch of Percocets. One way or another, I suppose everything will turn out fine.

Seriously? Butch has had two top 5 recruiting classes. We have just as much talent as they do. The talent issue is not an excuse anymore cause now it's all about execution on both sides of the ball. This game is very winnable.

This. At some point, we have to start expecting Jones and company to be able to coach the team to a win against a tough ranked opponent. So far, we have not seen this, and there are no excuses for us losing this game, and if we do it will come down to game-day coaching and preparedness.

Agree with OP. If we lose however, FL becomes as must win as it gets as far as momentum is concerned.

Stopping Joe Mixon? Isn't Semaje Perine the one who we should be worried about, he broke that record last year and had a breakout year.

Mixon may be a bigger weapon in their new offense because of his pass catching ability.

Same thing that will happen if we win, just in larger numbers. There will surely be the "If we don't do ___ better, the we will lose the rest of our games except Vandy" threads. Or maybe, "We looked sloppy. Need to tuck those jerseys in".
