Theres never a good time to play Bama. Flame away, but the younger generation could care less about the rivalry with them. Shouldnt be playing them every year. Automatically puts us at a disadvantage and automatic L.
I won't flame but I'll agree to disagree and state why.
If Currie & or administration are halfway competent this year is Bama's last freebie walk-in the park over us for a while.
If we get one of our longshot tier-1 HC preferences (Gruden, C. Kelly, Cooter), then next year although they're still heavily favored; an upset isn't outside the realm of possibility. Or we could be a 2-3 (1 out of conference) loss team they really don't want to have try and beat again in the SECCG.
If we get a 2nd tier option an upset is probably more of a prayer than a realistic hope but we should be able to at least make it competetive for a half. Then 2019 Game On!!!
If we get a 3rd tier coach.... Well our Bama problem is still secondary to trying to catch GA, FL, SC, Candy etc...
You're right in that it seems the younger generation could care less about the rivalry. If we can become competitive again that will quickly change.
As we try and return to prestige we need Bama more than they need us. If Kirby Smart can maintain what he has started then maybe were at an automatic disadvantage. If GA finishes the year as good as they've looked and play this way again next year I'll be worried.
If we can just get better than our division and make the SECCG with a 6-2 sec record (loss to bama, FL or GA) then an in season loss to Bama won't hurt our overall body of work for the season.
We still pulled the nations top OL Trey Smith from Bama in recruiting last year. While this year is turning into a catastrophic failure, the right HC hire can salvage recruiting and keep our incoming class highly rated.
We should never take Bama off the schedule. Why does nobody respect what Butch accomplished vs Spurrier? Because everyone knows Spurrier was a shadow of his former self.
One of the few things Kiffin did I respected was acknowledge Bama as a powerhouse and recognize TSIO as an opportunity to advance our program and take the fight to them.
I'm tired of UT being the butt of jokes and memes. Exasperated with our inability to truly become nationally relevant throughout flashes of 2015-2016 when it seemed as if we might have arrived. Worst of all I can't stand that we are becoming the recipients of sincere pity from pundits and other fan bases.
If we removed Bama from our schedule it would do more to damage our national prestige and reputation than any low we've experienced or anything else that has happened over the lost decade and a half.
