I think Asheville has a policy of no chain stores in their downtown, and they're doing quite well. It's a lot of fun and very eclectic. No one would wanna go to downtown Asheville if it was nothing but Gaps, Starbucks, McDonald's, etc.

Nobody who can afford to go to downtown Asheville shops at Dollar General on the daily.

That applies equally to all large companies. These laws simply target dollar stores. The dollar store industry has a business model that compels them to build stores near other stores and saturate the market. Apparently it is working and now government wants to dictate their business model.

If that’s a law passed to cover all of the stores it’s a fair law . If you singled out say Starbucks and say you can’t but allowed the others to go in , that’s a no no .

Asheville is very dog friendly, nothing better than bringing the dogs to a Brew Pub while I imbibe.

It is such a pleasure to go out to eat in Asheville and surrounding towns. There are very few chain restaurants. The prices are competitive and the food is superior.

As dollar stores sweep across America, they are facing growing scrutiny from opponents who argue that discount chains stifle local competition and limit poor communities' access to healthy food.

But there are no poor communities in this Trumpian utopia.

I have no idea what the law is in this area. What would the claim be, equal protection? If so, it'd just be rational basis review. Pretty easy burden for a locality.

By what measure?

But why do you need the government to arrange this? The food here in east valley Phoenix is phenomenal and I don't think we have rules about where chains can set up shop.

What are you basing this on as there’s tons of chain restaurants in Asheville? Is it city limits or simply “down town”.

They'll be so much healthier not eating 1200 calorie salads that they can't afford

I have no hard data. I just know when I visit it seems to have a very bustling downtown. I see lots of people for such a small town and nearly no empty storefronts. I know a lot of that is just tourism, but those tourists aren't going to come from Atlanta, Charlotte, NYC etc to shop at Best Buy and Old Navy.

Just talking about the main downtown area. There's an urban outfitters. Is there any other chain? Tupelo Honey is maybe technically a chain at this point.

If you ever have a chance to own a dollar general store building, do it. The lease for dollar general to occupy the building is a gold mine.

Wait I thought everyone was poor except the 1%ters , everyones working two jobs that is why unemployment is so low and we need to bump minimum wage to $15 an hour for everyone . So confusing .

It's a discussion worth having, there are very few, if any, true grocery stores within city limits all across the nation.

The result is the dollar store model because of it.

Supermarket chains avoid low-income neighborhoods, even though they promised not to

I know in Cincinnati there are basically no grocery stores near poor area's. Detroit has none in it's city limits. One reason, loss and loss prevention are one of contributing factors. Because Kroger's HQ is in Cinci there have been talks about these issues especially pertaining to this city, where Kroger just opened one downtown.

There are a bunch of them close by. Ruth's Chris and Mellow Mushroom are basically downtown.
