This defense is legitimately bad.

From SB Nation. Not my words, theirs...

"The game was as simple as this: Mike Bobo had Tim Banks in a bear trap all game long, and the trap refused to go off. Banks would remove his foot only to put it back down the next drive. It wasn’t until OT that it finally clasped. It took Georgia three plays to score and hand Tennessee its 9th straight loss to the Bulldogs, and Tennessee has still not beaten Kirby Smart since his first season at Georgia.

Aguilar and Brazzell were sensational. This is the most wide open Heupel’s offense has looked since Hendon Hooker broke every school efficiency record. At the end of the day, the defense doesn’t hold up. Under Tim Banks, Tennessee’s defense has allowed 29.7 points per game to top-20 teams since the start of 2023 in the regular season and CFP, and 36.3 points per game in losses going back to 2022. It’s what separates this program from the truly elite of the sport. They can’t get stops. There’s no adjustments, never enough aggression on non-passing downs with blitzes, and just not enough discipline. Until that changes, we’ve seen this program’s ceiling."

Emphasis added. Let's hope we're both wrong, right?

That just strengthens my point. If you scored 38 points on Georgias defense and still don’t win, major problem
If Kirby gets ahead in a game he slows the game down so they probably wont score that much vs top SEC unless like the Vols, someone makes them the hunter. They got fortunate on some well timed PIs and a perfect pass on 4th and 6 that if had missed the UGA faithful would have trashed Bobo whole weekend. I think they were throwing that for a PI but were pleasantly surprised. I think Stockton probably hits that pass 30 to 40% of time. There were times in this game that I though Tennessee might blow UGA out but everything fell into place for UGA and they kept pace and waited for the mistake and cashed in, what resilient teams do. I will say Tennessee even without their best DB and their highest rated O-Lineman looked like the better team to me. The scoreboard said different.

Is Banks a top DC? Probably not but he was all Heupel could hire in 2021. Few DCs want to be around an offense like this & he had the equivalent of 4 starters out on defense. Add to it both teams were playing totally blind as to what the opponent would do on offense, it was the easiest “over” of the year.

The defensive roster is improving each year but they’ve gotta get some big bodies in the portal come next year.

A missed kick was the difference. Let’s not lose focus.

I agree with your bottom two points, and respectfully disagree with certain aspects of the first....

Mind you...I'm wrong a lot...never was a football coach...and did not stay at a Holiday Inn last night.

But...if I'm an established or up-and-coming DC...this is absolutely the offense I want on the other side. Yes, I'm going to have to play 90 snaps a game instead of 60-70, but if I'm good at what I do, I can close that gap with my style of play. If I know I can count on the offense for 30-40 points a game, then that becomes the "bar" I set for the defense. Hold them under 28, and we win most of the time.

Anybody know Banks PPG allowed against Top 20 teams? I think it's 29.7. It's 36.3 in losses. Championship caliber? Not by a long shot.

There ain't a DC out there...Kirby Smart included...who won't take that deal. So go find the next Kirby, and let's see what UT can do with a DC with a chip on his shoulder. He's out there. Let's find him before Bama or UF does.

Or get used to a good season that ends with an embarrassing loss to a team that has the caliber of DC we need.

If I’m wrong I’m wrong, but I bet UGA doesn’t score 38 points in regulation against most other sec teams they play
Context don’t matter ?? They had to defend all day because the offense put em back on the field a lot with quick scores or stall out drives… they ran what 100 plays ?? They have athletes too that would start here… nature of the beast they leaned on us a bit and we not 2024 defense level yet especially without 4 key contributors but we are far from trash or legitimately bad… we force a lot of negative plays and turnovers… we could just be getting abused with no wins we just give up too many explosives and 4th downs right now but the talent and playmakers are there… we gotta keep getting better and gaining experience..

Banks is not good against quality opponents, plain and simple

At least with the injuries we have now. And even with injuries, giving up 500 yards to Stockton and that offense at home is putrid.

This pass defense is awful and has been shredded by Angeli and Stockton. Almost 600 yards passing given up in just two games against QBs that aren’t close to the best we’ll see this year.

There’s nothing in the middle of this defense either. The DTs we have left get swallowed up and Telander looks like he runs a 5.0 40. He’s slow and got roasted all game. And for some reason we want to play a walk on 20 snaps a game at LB despite all the young guys we have recruited. That is unexplainable.

If Hobbs, Moi, and McCoy can’t come back, this is going to be a very bad defense that gets killed all year. Horribly disappointed in Banks and what he’s doing right now, we should not have regressed this far.

So if those defensive linemen are able to play, the defense will be better and Banks will be a better coach?

At least one of those guys is on track to be back by Mississippi State, and having Moi and Hobbs back should mean at minimum an improvement in the run defense. I'm TBD on the defense against the passing game, but if Mod doesn't make it back this year then our secondary is looking at a 2022-type of season

A word of caution: McCoy coming back in 2025 doesn’t mean he’s the McCoy of 2024. I’m not saying he won’t be as good but there’s a chance he won’t.

We are missing the two starting cornerbacks and don't have much at LB.

But those two things will probably improve as the season goes along.

Plus, we are seriously stacked on Offense.
Safety is a big issue. 15 is a young dog, but who else is back there?
Big, physically imposing defensive tackle(s) is a need. We certainly have dropped of in that regard this year.
13 should play more off the edge. Wish he had a linebacker that looks like he does.
Telander is a great kid, but not the starter on a title winning defense. In my opinion. Not athletic and rangy enough. He's not a big deterrent in the passing game either.

We have got to continue to recruit towards an elite defense. We just aren't there yet. No two ways about it. Other than maybe qb, a kid or two being out injured can't be an excuse for losing. Most schools are missing starters somewhere at some point.

I do see your points.

Did you happen to watch that safety UGA had playing deep? Pure athlete. Reminded me of the good ole days of Deon Grant sitting back there lurking.

When you watch old film, do the players look like different athletes to you? They look huge to me.
Yes!

But underneath the size, there is a certain pureness of a select few that just jumps out a bit. A certain ability to wiggle or swivel...I can't really think of words for just a natural athlete. In the hips

I could be wrong . . . But I think Spurrier finally won it all . . . After he got Bob Stoops as his DC.

Banks is not awful . . . He is notably average for the SEC.

Injuries aside, Bank’s strategy and schemes just don’t seem to be working. Way to many 3rd and 4th and long conversions that look way too easy. He needs to find ways to help our defense be more successful. Talent or not, it just seems like our defense always looks confused and even average teams don’t let opponents convert 100 % of 4th downs. Something is broken.

Yep if he hit the FG UGA is probably 10th in AP and UT is somewhere 6th thru 8th. That's how meaningless the rankings are, the team that basically won in regulation sans the special teamer that missed a FG he hits 9 out of 10. So UGA got credit for staying in the game and waiting for a team to beat itself. IMO UGA didn't win UT lost in regulation. In OT UGA did win but it should have never went there, we all know that.

Agree. I think Georgia isn’t as good as Georgia usually is but I still think they’re better than anyone else in the conference. Ohio State I will say is better than them maybe Oregon as well. Penn State is decent but idk if I would take them over Georgia. Miami also decent. LSU maybe. I think easily Georgia is a top five team. Jmo though.
People will not be saying this next weekend when Bama beats them.
