I’m sorry brother but I’m gonna have to challenge you here- Clemson, LSU,Bama2x, FL 2x Tim Banks has made TN defense respectable againTim Banks is legitimately bad in big games. Watch we will hold Miss State to like 10 points lol he wants to flex on the smaller teams to make himself seem better than he is when in reality we are just out talen ting people
We were down to our 4th or 5th string DTs there at the end. UGA kept setting the edge and it was so frustrating. BoBo has coached circles around Tim Banks for the past 3 years. Its frustrating yes, but encouraging because we have so much room to get better. That was 2 playoff teams going to war. Its just heart breaking it was our Vols that gave the game away.500 yards and 44 points to a QB that hasn’t been able to throw on anyone making his first road start.
And we let them run all over us for over half the game before changing things up and selling out to stop the run.

Yea, thats another reason Heupel chose to kicm it with 7 seconds left. First time i have seen Huepel coach not to lose instead of going for the kill. Also I'm gonna get real petty here and call out the blatant hold on their big run in OT. Right guard got beat in the gap and had a handful of jersey, but of course that Ichabod Crane ref and his crew quickly looked away.
This is pretty spot on. I’ve wondered if McCoy comes back at CB if we would be better just letting Boo play safety next to Farooq, and playing McMurray at nickel. Hood and McCoy the CB’s.I think an honest assessment of the defense is:
1. We can see the dropoff at DT (even if we were healthy) is pretty significant compared to last year. We look smaller / we are younger with the injuries / we can’t stop the power run up the middle (Syracuse even did this to UT so it’s not just that we played UGA).
2. Without Gibson / McCoy we are very susceptible at corner - more teams will now pick on Redmond from the jump.
3. Our talent at safety is - at best -
Mid level for the SEC. Maybe not even that.
4. We don’t tackle well in space too much.
5. Carter is a player at LB . . . Herring shows promise. Telander is physical but slow for SEC LB play.
Overall - before injuries - this defense, talent wise, is at best a middle of the pack defense in the SEC. With the injuries / lack of depth, we are not even that.
Last year, the defense carried the offense. This year the offense will have to carry the defense.
Until UT is really good / has true depth on both sides of the ball . . . They will be 7-5 to 9-3 team with annual losses to the big boys. With our lack of offense last year, it was a great job by our coaches to get to 10-2.
Evaluation, recruiting, and development have to be better for us to take that next stepI think an honest assessment of the defense is:

Georgia had some injuries on their OL too I’m pretty sureThis is pretty spot on. I’ve wondered if McCoy comes back at CB if we would be better just letting Boo play safety next to Farooq, and playing McMurray at nickel. Hood and McCoy the CB’s.
If Hobbs and Moi come back healthy it should help some, but yes, I still think there is a drop off from last year at DT even when fully healthy.
As a bright spot, I think those were two of the better O-lines we’ll play this year. Syracuse had a starting guard (Ferguson) that was a former top 60 recruit and a transfer from Alabama/Georgia. So, good tests at DT thus far.
Imagine what UGA fans are saying right now. They gave up 371 yards and 4TDs to a guy that played for App St last season and has only been taking snaps in this system for 1.5 months.500 yards and 44 points to a QB that hasn’t been able to throw on anyone making his first road start.
And we let them run all over us for over half the game before changing things up and selling out to stop the run.
I thought our LB's have been putrid all year. Occasional they hit a hole off tackle and get someone down but can not contain or tackle very well. Didn't think Carter played well at all year. Seee them way out of position or very slow and late getting there. Our DB's and Safety's are coming down and getting the first hits in the run game Most of the time after 4 yard or more gains. At least with the injuries we have now. And even with injuries, giving up 500 yards to Stockton and that offense at home is putrid.
This pass defense is awful and has been shredded by Angeli and Stockton. Almost 600 yards passing given up in just two games against QBs that aren’t close to the best we’ll see this year.
There’s nothing in the middle of this defense either. The DTs we have left get swallowed up and Telander looks like he runs a 5.0 40. He’s slow and got roasted all game. And for some reason we want to play a walk on 20 snaps a game at LB despite all the young guys we have recruited. That is unexplainable.
If Hobbs, Moi, and McCoy can’t come back, this is going to be a very bad defense that gets killed all year. Horribly disappointed in Banks and what he’s doing right now, we should not have regressed this far.
