How strange would it be if we lost to the reigning NCAA Div 1 football champions by one point (Florida) and the reigning NCAA Div 1 basketball champions by one point (perhaps Ohio State)? Does that mean we are truly that close to National Championships or do we just play great teams close?

that's a pretty interesting thought...and to think that we had a pretty significant lead on both of those teams...but that's why they are champions: they fight back...which is why we aren't champions: we fold up.

Football: Yes, Basketball: No

Basketball we are OVERachievers, Football we are UNDERachievers

Stop... the facts you brought up don't make it any easier to deal with the fact that we struggled against Air Force and lost two of our key players, or lost to OSU twice by a combined 3 points, or lost to South Carolina, or got manhandled by Arky/Penn State.

As a Vol fan right now, we should be hating life right now.

So close, yet so far...

I would say that just about sums up Tennessee sports.

A lot of championship team struggles against bad teams. Take Florida vs. South Carolina for example or the 98 season. We almost lost to Cuse and Arkansas.

Arkansas was undefeated and ranked in the top 10 when we played them. Syracuse made the Bowl Alliance that year, playing Florida in the Orange Bowl.

Your premise is correct; your example is bad.

You all probably don't care. But I was once and still kinda am in a similar situation as UT. My robotics team lost the midwest regional title to the eventual national champs three years in a row by a combined three points...

yes but Arkansas did not finish in the top ten I believe.

They were undefeated and talking about a birth in the National Championship before we beat them in November. They finished the season 9-3 and ranked 16th in the AP. That was a very good team the Hogs brought to Knoxville.

Again, there are much better examples.

I missed going to the national spelling bee when I was in the eighth grade because I ran through the word extraterrestrial too quickly and tripped over my tongue, accidentally leaving out the last R. Seriously.

(I don't know which one of us is the bigger geek.)
