Third and shoop

I'm going to be bold and just throw it out there. I don't care how many of you hate me for saying it.

People used to say that Peyton Manning couldn't beat Florida, but the reality is Fulmer and more importantly Chavis couldn't beat Florida.

Fulmer was always too conservative on offense, and Chavis could not protect a lead.

There I said it.

I don't care how bad Dooley was, that doesn't excuse those two.

Chavis was probably the best DC we ever had. Given that fact, let's not go overboard on his greatness amongst DCs historically. After 1998, how many national championships did his defenses win? I'll wait while you count them up.

Don't get me wrong, I love the Chief. When the Chief had top notch defensive talent, he won a lot of games with his conservative ways. Hell, Fulmer was just as conservative with all his field goal kicking. But when the talent pool began to dwindle, the flaws could no longer be concealed.

Third and Chavis was REAL whether you like it or not. There never was a "Third and Smart" saying, and for good reason.

Finally, some people look to Chavis as our only example of defensive greatness and use guys like Sunseri to compare him to. That's a little like saying eating a sh!t sanwhich was fantastic compared to getting nut cancer. One coach is clearly better than the other, but the greatness of the former is not defined by the ineptitude of the latter.

That is all.
Ken Donahue may like to have a 1 on 1 discussion about your familiarity of his time on The Hill.

Why isn't Salt-n-Pepa "Shoop" the obvious choice here on third down instead of "Third Down for What"?

Mrs. Chavis,
Chief could beat the Vanderbilts and UT Martins of the world with that D but when GA, FL, Maryland, Penn State, Nebraska, and LSU came to play he panicked. They could drive down the field at will. It's not the prevent that was bad. Just the implementation.

Your mistaken, John Chavis and the Vols won their fair share of games against top teams, I never saw the panic your speaking of.....I don't think you know what your talking about

You didn't grow up watching the vols in the 90's and it's painfully obvious.

P.S. It's "you're" mistaken...

You couldn't be more wrong.

Are you a stalker? Do you have to reply to everything I post in this thread? Calm down. It's ok to disagree with people. You're a Fulmerite with sour grapes and I loved it when he got fired.

The game had passed them by and the fans got tired of seeing our team getting their teeth kicked in by 75% of our schedule and losing big games.

They rarely could prepare the team for a big game. We lost several high profile games we should've won. It was time for them to go and the majority of the Vol fans knew it.

Not that this is thread worthy, but when I heard Chief say "pretty good is the best of the worst and the worst of the best" I couldn't help but think of how UT under Butch (maybe I should say under Jancek) has been really good in some areas and really bad in others (e.g. 3rd down vs 4th down).
We can talk all about the offense and the passing game but if UT isnt REALLY good on defense, there won't be a championship this year.
In not saying title or bust, but I've been saying the defense just needs to he a little better... The offense a little better... Truthfully the defense has to be really good.
