Many of us older guys remember 3rd and Chavis. John was, and still is a great DC but we did seem to give up a lot of 3rd and longs. The down seemed to change to 4th last year but the outcome was the same.

So I am hereby calling for a new mantra to be added to the Vol Nation lexicon THIRD AND SHOOP!!

What Paul Bain is to the destruction of offensive linemen, THIRD AND SHOOP will be to opposing offenses. Third and long? Get ready to cart your QB off the field if you dare to allow him to take a 3 or 5 step drop! Seven step?!! Please!!! He better just keep running ! Third and eight just became 4th and 25. So just suck it up and hand it off for 2 yards and a cloud of dust and punt the ball back to Dobbs and Company!

Forget 3rd Down for What! THIRD AND SHOOP is here! If you can’t make a first down in two downs you are done! Because we own 3rd down!! That reverse just got stuffed for negative eight! Screen pass? It just got intercepted and returned for TD (Kirkland you the man!!) Draw play? Who’s your 2nd team tailback ‘cause your starter just got stuffed for a five yard loss and is counting training staff fingers on the sideline!

It’s THIRD AND SHOOP baby!! The Vols are coming and hell’s coming with ‘em!!!

*****ing about 3rd and Chavis exposes you for the lack of knowledge you have in football. You think they pay him millions of dollars, and by that I mean multiple high profile sec teams, bc of bad play calling? The call was fine. Every DC plays prevent defense. We got burned on several. You remember them so well bc when playing prevent you are playing from a position of strength. If you have bad judgement on 3rd down play calling you won't last long as a DC at a major program let alone 3 of them.

Well a couple of things there sparky. This post is what's called a spoof or a form of comedy. Looks like you missed that. Also, if you will notice I acknowledged John Chavis as an excellent DC and I for one wish he had been retained when Fulmer was let go. That said "3rd and Chavis" was a fairly common expression used to express the consternation Vol fans felt with our seeming inability to contain teams on critical 3rd down plays, particularly long third down plays. So save your arm chair coaching for serious threads...you know where serious football is discussed. Thanks for posting though and have a good evening.

So you mean the thread is nonsense and stupid. We agree then.

The phrase "3rd and Chavis" was like a spot light. When I heard someone use that phrase I knew their knowledge of football was extremely limited and it was as if a spot light was shown on them.

Its nice to see everybody is in good moods tonight! It was just a lighthearted thread.

Honestly i remember ALOT of Vol fans *****ing about 3rd and Chavis. Then shortly after they were all crying wishing we had him back.

I was sad when he left. The trio of Fulmer, Chief, and Cut rocked!

Chavis was a good DC, but he did tend to get very conservative in tight games. Ill never forget the 01uga game. the screen pass to Stephens was awesome. We had some good teams back then.

3rd and Chavis haunts us all

Not all of us. Some of us see the reality of how good the chief really was. I mean how good have our defenses been since JC? The 3rd and Chavis moniker is as dumb as it gets. Until Shoop was hired, I would have much rather had JC instead of Monte, Sal and Jancek.

John Chavis was the reason that Fulmer lasted as long as he did at UT, no question about that is there?

You must be a millennial. You need to go back and watch us play LSU the last few games in the Fulmer era. Now there's a reason to say "good lord".

Yeah like I said, how well did that work out? Surely Kiffin, Sunseri and Jancek were much better than Chavis right? Surely there are loads of statistics to show that right?

Well if some truly believe 3rd and C it should bode well for us when we travel to A&M. Also Chavis was conservative but a lot of DC's are and were. It worked out well for us in 98 we won a lot of tight games that year. 13-0.

Chavis rarely blitzed on 3rd down. Which made him predictable. Great coordinator but he did have an Achilles heel here at TN
