1. Redzone Defense

I saw a stat that we allowed other teams to score 90% of the time they entered the "redzone" That's gotta improve. Others?

Anytime a team gets into the red zone, they should come away with points. How many times did we force the opposition to kick a field goal and how many times did we allow the TD? I'd say that's more important.

I think it was something like 22 TD's to 8 or 9 FG's...can't remember the exact numbers

Returns coverage. Kickoff and punt. We're going to get eaten alive with them moving the kickoffs 5 yards back unless Phil and friends can actually improve our special teams play.

And kick returns also. 11t our of 119 is embarrasing.

With the exception of kicking, we've had chronic special teams problems. Gotta improve that (hey, why don't we actually hire a coach who specializes in Spec. teams?!)

We need a more well rounded offense (see posts above)

D needs to focus on stuffing the run and putting more pressure on the QB. In that order. If we can't stop the run- it's gonna be a long season.

I agree and have been harping on this since last season ended. In order to compete for the SEC title, we HAVE to:

1) Get more physical in our run blocking so that we can rely on our rushing offense.
2) Get back to a stiffling rush defense, holding opponents to an average of around 100 ypg or less.

Secondarily,

3) Even if our special teams aren't much better than average, we need to at least minimize our mistakes.

I feel like we made major strides in our execution and discipline last year, the majority of our problems were a result of just not having the horses on the line or scrimmage.

 agreed. and the sad thing is we go in to this season with those same questions again. i like the potential we have in regards to both better than this time last year, but alas, it is still just that right now......potential.

Also the Defense gotta do a lot better on 3rd and long situations.

-3rd and long(need to be more aggressive, don't let the offense attack)

-Run game(yeah the pass game was nice, we need a good compliment)

-Stopping the run(I guess this could be conditioning, we can't wear down)

-Special teams consistency(we looked great at times, but horrible at times)

Despite the fact that we did have some key screwups last year, we were a pretty disciplined team. If we can improve the 4 I listed, along with keeping the other aspects up, we could have a really good year. That doesn't mean we can ditch the passing game and run all the time or stack 10 in the box to stop the run and let Hefney cover the backfield. We have to have a good mix. Throw in a few sprinkles(occasional Mustang, maybe a little 3-4) and we could be in good shape.

Yesterday, I watched the UT/UK game from last year and Arian Foster and Lucas Taylor were horrible on kick returns. Granted Taylor got popped in the head, but he fumbled before he took the blow to the head

Normally I'd disagree with you and say what we need is depth at DT. With a good rotation, injury isn't as much of a concern. However, against UGA in 2005 we had tons of depth and the Bulldogs ran it down our throats in the fourth quarter. It wouldn't surprise me if the dogs averaged 10 yards a carry in that quarter. I am not exaggerating. The D-line really looked tired. That was likely due to our offensive ineptitude. So, I'd say stopping the run will be helped by our offense giving the D rest, and also better depth at DT.

I can't figure out why we put Arian back there in the first place. He didn't have great speed last season, probably because of his many injuries. Even so, it's not like these are the first two guys to have problems as UT return men. I don't think we're coaching these guys well and I don't think the coaches always put the right man back there. It took us too long to realize that our best return men were Mark Jones and Derrick Tinsley. They didn't take over return duties until late in the season. Instead we were forced to watch Rashad Baker and Hefney underachieve.

I think this year we should put Vinson and Jones back there. Both guys are quick as cats

I feel like we might need those guys at WR. They'll have plenty to worry about learning that stuff. If we're using a freshman for return duties, I'd like him to focus almost exclusively on special teams.
