Tennessee linebackers coach Tommy Thigpen likes what he sees when analyzing the tendencies of South Carolina freshman Jake Bentley...The strong arm. The pocket presence in lieu of a scrambler's mentality.

..."That's what we like to play against," Thigpen said during Monday's Knoxville Quarterback Club meeting at Calhoun's on the River. "The mobile quarterbacks, that guy running the ball creates more issues for you. We love when a quarterback is like a Georgia or South Carolina...But Alabama and Texas A&M, that's what we struggle with."

...Thigpen says Tennessee freshman Daniel Bituli...has "the same kind of talent" as Kirkland.

But no one is supposed to be able to run against UT!

3...2....1...injury bug, new system, etc.

Taylor Lamb (App St): 3.5 ypc, 8 carries for 30 yrds (goodness, Kamara only ran 3.5 / 6 for 21 that game).
Greg Windham (OH): 4.3, 9 for 39
Austin Apple (FL): 3.4, 7 for 30

Since a true mobile QB presents a whole new set of issues, someone tell me who doesn't "struggle" with a mobile QB?

Bama hasn't struggled with arguably the best "mobile qb" in the SEC the last 2 seasons.....Dobbs has run for a combined -12 yards on 23 carries.

Vols defense has truly struggled, giving up almost 1000 yds rushing in 3 games, not to mention the many times the DB's have been burned over the top....not exactly the recipe for an SEC east championship, no?:w00t:

So how long does Shoop's honeymoon last and he starts getting heat from VolNation?

Alabama is in a class by themselves. That being said, check out their performance against Clemson last year. True mobile QB's that run and pass well are a problem for practically everyone.

Concerning Josh Dobbs, he can run. Passing is more problematic for him.

Given our struggles with containing any runs to the edge the last few games and obviously missing our two best linebackers, I wonder if the coaching staff has considered moving Kelly down to the OLB position. While obviously two totally different positions, his physique seems to make that an option and it would open up some reps for Warrior et al.

Shoop gets a pass because of the injuries. Losing all conference LBs and a CB is huge. Add on it took Tuttle awhile to come back from injury and now KMac out. Next year he starts fresh. Hopefully he keeps his mouth shut and just let his defense speak for itself. However, next year the defense needs to drastically improve or the honeymoon is over.

Not "all" but our history vs backups isn't the greatest. Suspect we will have our hands full Saturday.

True but I like our chances knowing they have to go with the freshman qb now. He should see a lot of things he's never experienced before.

That was last year. Different defense this year. Bama's defense looks much faster.
