yeah, your right...that one loss kept him from winning the heisman!! Peyton was over-publicized and by the end of the year everyone go sick of hearing of him, mostly ABC and ESPN, and he got screwed over. I personally blame Keith Jackson. now, if you wanna try again you can but ill just keep rolling along! :eek:lol:

Are you listening to "personal power" tapes or something?

Mariotti is a complete tool. He was Charles Woodson's #1 cheerleader back in '97 and I plainly remember him taunting the Tennessee fanbase and bragging about how he helped "his guy" win the Heisman... I wouldn't normally wish bodily harm on anybody that hadn't harmed my family or myself, but if tomorrow morning I saw in the news that Jay Mariotti had died in a fiery car crash I would smile knowing that my day had gotten off to a good start.

:lolabove: you and Ozzie Guillen both lol

PTI is all ESPN has thats it pointblank

the rest of ESPN..........to quote Brett Myers, Boom outta here

PTI is a great show... the worst I've seen lately is the new Sportsnation show w/ colin cowherd.. plain awful!

I think Cowherd has potential as a host, but the format of that show is, well, moronic. I can just picture 19,768 18-22 year olds who weigh 1.75-4 times ideal for their weight waddling to the computer to vote or chime in on the topic. You know, the same people that masturbate over a video of a nude Erin Andrews shot through a peephole. Think Simpsons "Comic Book Guy" with a jersey.

While ESPN and ABC (who had just bought them) obviously had little if nothing to do with the Heisman decision of 97 to pretend like the media wasn't tired of hearing about Peyton Manning is a little absurd.

It was instructive to me to watch a rebroadcast of UT/Arkansas 97 last year on ESPN Classic. The game was played three weeks or so before the Heisman ceremony, and the announcers spent a considerable amount of the second half wondering whether anybody could beat out Manning. They ran through a half dozen guys, mostly to dismiss them, but Charles Woodson was not among the guys they mentioned. Two weeks before the vote, and Manning was still the prohibitive favorite by default -- with Woodson not even being mentioned. It seems pretty clear in retrospect that nobody was very happy with Manning as the prohibitive favorite, and that he lost mostly because people were sick of him. When a DB wins based on a two-week body of work, it's not about the DB -- it's voters being sick of and dissatisfied with the frontrunner.

Completely agree.. I cast my vote for Ross Perot.

Maybe time has altered my perception of the heisman race of '97. But I could swear it used to be ESPN's fault for playing Woodson's handful of big plays over and over again.

Now it's The media's fault for overhyping Peyton as the front runner. I still contend that if he didn't blow the goat against Florida, he would have that stupid trophy in his possession. .......but would he have his SB trophy?

no, not exactly.

heisman candidacy is still very much influenced by who ESPN decides to pick up as the best player and show replays of and talk about over and over again...they get shown alot more and it does influence the people who can't watch all the games, but can only watch the replays/summaries. But it still happens (Tebow the last 2 years - committee wasnt going to give it to him twice yet though, reggie bush, woodson too to name some). I think the Woodson year was just the first year ESPN realized that they could influence and have some weight in the overall heisman decision

One bad game early in the season wouldn't have cost him the award (Tebow won it w/ a 3 loss team). He did plenty throughout the rest of the season (more importantly perhaps, good games in the later parts) make up for it.

I dont think I have ever expounded on this subject but, if Woodson doesn't return that game winning punt against OSU, Manning wins the award. imo

Pretty sure it was Chavis who blew the goat against UF year after year. Might want to recheck them numbers.

Hey, I have yet to see Woodsen win a MVP in a Super Bowl, or maybe it is because I haven't seen him play in a Super Bowl. That Heisman really means a lot doesn't it!

If your IQ is less than 90, it qualifies you to be an ESPN announcer. Chris Fowler really orchestrated the Woodsen deal!

Yeah... but that's the problem with bringing the team concept in when discussing individual awards.

You are correct in the statement on how we were simply incapable of stopping florida's offense at the time. But in the end, they always say, Peyton never beat Florida. It's not completely accurate, but that's what it comes down to. I've learned to backhand gator fans by saying he beat Rex Grossman. :dance2:

How many interceptions did Chavis throw against Florida in those games?

If we're gonna get technical, Woodson played in a Super Bowl long before Manning did.

Yeah, but to be technical I did not see him play thank God! He was an egomanic when playing while in college and thought his doo did not stink! :lolabove:

Espn isn't anti-Kiffin, there are anti-Tennessee. Clemson has twice as many secondary violations as us but I don't see an Outside The Lines special on them.
That is because no one would watch a segment on Clemson. A milquetoast school, athletically, elicits little response, positive or negative.

UT, despite the last few lean years, still has a rabid fan base and an equally rabid 'hater' base.

Woodsons Heisman lock play was the punt return against Ohio State...... a play that Michigan commited a hold and a clip on, but Big Ten refs were hungry to help Woodson and scUM get something...without that return that shouldnt have been Ohio State wins 14-10, Nebraska dont get screwed by the AP and Peyton wins the Heisman, blame the Michigan homer ref crew, who subsequently all 6 are banned from officiating OSU games now and have been since 97......

Clemson has fallen off a bit the last decade or so.....however they still have more wins than the gators all time, actually have an undefeated season, unlike the gators, and have won a real outright National Title when they actually belonged in said Title game, none of UF's 3 titles are legit in my mind, because they got lucky someone who was undefeated lost in the last week of the season all 3 times. if my alma matter didnt beat Arizona State in the 97 Rose Bowl Florida would have 2 undeserved NC's instead of 3.
