Cool story, bro:

Took my kids to a summer camp in South Carolina and they were playing a "you just got of the long bus ride so lets burn some energy and introduce you to the camp" game. After a bit of running around, they formed a circle and began asking who's from which state. Upon hearing that we were from TN, the counselor (girl) who was leading the group begins to say, "So what's up with that? What kind of mascot is Volunteer. What even is that anyway?!"

I spoke up and simply asked if any of the counselors (there were about 5 or so there) were from TX. Unbelievably (you literally can't make this stuff up,) two of them emphatically answered to the affirmative - including the idiot, er..., young lady who had asked what on earth a Volunteer was.

I waited from her to stop being excited at her own answer and replied simply, "You're welcome."

The lady beside me, whom I had never seen before nor since, was from South Carolina and exclaimed, "ouch!"

Ah ignorance. At least it's curable.

PS. History teacher here, too. Everyone should look up the full story, but the short version is the governor of TN asked for 3,000 men to go save Texas - 30,000 went. Gives me chills just thinking about how It's Great...To Be....A Tennessee Volunteer!

This is awesome. Former History major here...I do not miss sitting in the Humanities building on a hot day. Back on track: so many of my friends this season have made fun of my obsession with UT football and like clockwork ask some silly question like "what is a Volunteer even?". Silly people... all they know about that war is Billy Bob Thornton was Davy Crockett in the Alamo.

Not only did the Volunteers help them gain statehood we also gave them the last QB to win a championship at A&M (Branndon Stewart in 1998). They did help us by beating KState in the Big 12 championship game, so that's a fair trade.

Will definitely be going to the Alamo and Crockett's grave while we are in Texas.

Seems that lil Bailey needs to learn some history before shooting her mouth off. Hope she feels as dumb as she appears

We had that nickname long before the Alamo. The nickname was given due to the volunteers that fought with Andrew Jackson at the battle of New Orleans during the war of 1812.

However, it is true that Texas is our b!tch.

When you go to the Alamo, be sure to wear your colors.....and by colors I mean a tee shirt that says TENNESSEE. These brushpoppers are all too quick to think every Power T is Texas.

If you go you will also note that in the roll call by state, there were more Tennesseans present than any one else (except Mexicans of course)

Also gave us General Robert R. Neyland.
