If Peyton did retire this year and wanted to coach at UT, which coach would Butch fire? Would Butch fire a coach and hire Peyton?

This is completely theoretical. I just wanted to get everyone's perspective.

No, Peyton wouldn't want to come in that way. Someone's contract would have to be up...like...maybe Debords...

Peyton would come on as the QB coach. We currently have a GA in that position. If he meshed with the coaching staff and wanted the promotion he would be moved to the OC in 2017 or 2018 when DeBord's contract ran out/ given a 1 year extension

I think he would prefer USCw so he could keep up with the commercials and maybe land a late night TV show on the side.

No one would have to be fired. DeBord is technically the OC and QB coach, but he works extensively with coach Mahoney and the OL. I think you could easily just make DeBord the OC and offensive line assistant and hire Manning as QB coach.

He has mentioned twice this year that he would like to coach at TN whenever he retired. He mentioned it once this week on the Dan Patrick show.

I think the only other team I'd be concerned about is Duke because of his relationship with Cut. Talk about losing the fanbase, lol...Butch better have a plan if this becomes at all realistic.

If word got out that Peyton reached out to Butch, and Butch said no??...... :whistling: :bash:

No way Butch is that dumb! He would find or make a place for Peyton.

I thought there was an NCAA rule that limited teams to nine assistant coaches (in addition to the HC and S&C coaches). If so, we would have tell one of our coaches to look elsewhere if we wanted to bring Peyton aboard.

Yes. Would make sense for it to be Mahoney or Azzani. PM, in this never gonna happen scenario, could coach qbs, Butch could focus on WR(or a GA could) and Debord could focus on line if Mahoney goes since he already is doing that.

The NCAA needs to look at Bama then. Their team picture has more coaches than players.:):):)

I think someone would actually have to be fired (or their contract allowed to expire without renewal) in this purely hypothetical situation.

NCAA sets limit at 9 assistant coaches for FBS programs, I think (plus 2 graduate assistants, plus strength & conditioning, nutrition, etc. staff). We have 9 assistant coaches now. Peyton can't be a GA and wouldn't get hired for S&C/nutrition. Therefore, one of our current 9 asst coaches would have to go, under this scenario.

Since Peyton would undoubtedly be working with the offense, OC is one real possibility. He might work specifically with QBs (and maybe WRs too), so the Pass Game Coordinator / WR Position Coach is a second possibility. Running backs aren't his thing, so Gillespie is probably safe (plus, his position group is probably the single best-performing of them all right now). Elder is safe at Tight Ends & Special Teams. Final possibility is DeBord shifting to OLine & Assistant Head Coach, which would mean Mahoney out.

So that's it. The 3 possibilities are DeBord out, Azzanni out, or DeBord shift and Mahoney out.

Having said all that...it's just a hypothetical. And not a very realistic one, primarily for the reason VolAllen already mentioned.

p.s. I don't know of a single thing in the NCAA rule book stopping a person from volunteering their time to help out a football team at practices, during spring and fall camp, etc. Look for something like this as far more likely than any firing or hiring scenario.

But what if saban hired him first???

Did you see his face when Henry scored the winning TD? He hates Alabama to the core. Saban could offer a salary equal to his own and I guarantee Peyton would still turn it down.
