Why the hell would you give that up?

I took a trip out to Colorado and loved it. I almost went to school there. Would love to live there.

Good questions. I was there for several years. Loved every minute. Absolute paradise for me. In a nutshell I had some very life altering experiences that made me question whether I would live if I continued down that path. Twas good money though, but also alot of babysitting as well. I would be out for 30 days at a time and make around 5 grand a month.

One instance me and a buddy were on our own time kayaking the Arkansas River and he rolled and had his right ear ripped off on a rock. I have also pulled several bodies from rivers in CO as a whitewater rescuer from guys having heart attacks or boats getting pinned against rocks and causing drownings.

Another time we were going across a boulder field and boulder the size of a car rolled and pinned a young man's leg. I had to call in a heli to bring in a field surgeon to amputate his leg after we tried all day to free him.

Another time we were summiting a peak on the other side of Aspen and a lightning storm came up and struck a peak very close by. I had seen a family on that peak shortly before the strike. I was a first responder to the scene and the Dad and the dog did not survive.

The one that really changed my thinking was when I was on a river trip in Utah and we came on shore to go for a hike. There were two seperate groups and I was one of the guides in the second group. When we got back to the boats after the hike we were missing a 13 year old girl from the other group. Another guide and myself back tracked up a canyon to see if we could find her and found her in a canyon where she had sat down and passed from natural causes.

There were others, but those experiences in particular made me realize why no insurance company would insure me due to my lifestyle.

Nice pics Blu. Some difficult things you've seen. I couldn't imagine being a guide especially when so many people don't realize how dangerous the wilderness can be.

Doyle, glad you got good news on your wife. Been thru that anxiety. It sucks, but since it's good news, I'd consider myself blessed that you just reevaluated some things.
Hman, didn't know about your wife. Actually thought you were a fat, gay man that drank ****ty beer. I wish you and your wife strength of mind and body during your battle.
