The WRASSLIN’ Thread

Crazy how guys just casually kick out of piledrivers nowadays.

Huge pet peeve of mine. (Both promotions)

The little nuances in professional wrestling are gone from WWE and AEW. I can’t remember the last time a wrestler focused on a specific body part to set up for their finisher later in the match.

You certainly see it less. I have seen Mina, Kyle O'Reilly, amd MJF do it fairly recently. But the announce team doesn't always call it out like in the past. I also see heels focusing on body parts in an effort to take finishers away from their opponent, which didn't used to be as prevalent.

Roderick Strong's move set is built to set up the 'Strongbow" but he doesn't use it much. I assume because it's basically the "Lion Tamer".

I think part of it is you don't see as many submission specialists anymore and a lot of the submissions you see now are hard book that way. How do you do that for a sleeper/choke out finisher? Even back in the day Boston Crab/Scorpion Deathlock finishers have rarely ever been setup that way. Strong and Dean Malenko are about the only ones I can think of that did/do.

Just catching up.

Could he recency bias but that was one of the best shows top to bottom show I’ve seen. I wouldn’t grade any match below a B+.
I would agree. It's arguably the best PPV AEW has done period. They have been the gold standard for PPVs for years imo. But the consistent high level of this one is impressive. When your lowest point at a show is that Mina vs Athena match, you've really got something.

My favorite match was Joe vs Ospreay. It felt like a watershed moment and a passing of the torch.

It definitely doesn’t happen every match or even every show but I see it in AEW some. Also, see taking away a finisher probably as often.

There’s also instances of “scouting” an opponent, which MJF definitely showcased at DoN.
