The WRASSLIN’ Thread

What does everyone think of the new WWE World Heavyweight Championship? The winner is decided at Night of Champions. I don't see the reason for it. They should just do away with the Universal Championship like rumored and have one champion. I read about this and was a little surprised.

I was never a big fan of having 2 "world championships." The "Universal" Championship is just dumb. It's actually a beautiful belt and kind of a throwback to the old WCW championship. I just think there are too many championships floating around in both AEW and WWE.

I like the callback to the "Big Gold Belt".

Are they going to unify the two belts Roman is holding now? It kind of feels like that lessens this new World Heavyweight Title. I don't get why they are doing that instead of just having Roman drop one.

To the best of my understanding, this new championship is going to be for whatever show Romans not on since they're looking to go for a hard split with the new brand split they're doing. I think the new draft starts on Smackdown Friday. I don't understand the point of having Roman as champion and introducing a new belt entirely. However,I do agree that it is a cool throwback to the Big Gold Belt.

I love the design. What about the old World Heavyweight Championship? Roman still has it. With this belt there will be 2.

It's still going to belong to Roman or whoever beats him (likely Cody at SummerSlam)... This new one seems like more of a secondary world championship for the brand split coming up. I think they've mentioned getting rid of the Universal Championship so Roman will probably just have the one and then they'll have this one on the show that he's not on as champion.

Well the universal belt is dumb. So I could get behind that. They are basically unifying them, whether they call it that or not. It still seems like it would be easier to just have Roman drop one though.

Watched WCW Hog Wild 96 and WCW Starrcade 97 over the past several days. A couple of takeaways... One obvious and one not so obvious....

1) Damn, Benoit, Guerrero, Malenko were so freaking good.

2) I had forgotten how incredibly over Sting was. I watched a few episodes of Nitro in between to kind of keep up with the storylines between the two seminal PPVs. There was the episode that aired September 16th or 18th 1997. It was the episode that Sting finally dropped the bat and just started whaling on the nWo. I don't know if I have heard a crowd go that nuts like that. The only thing i can compare it to in recent memory was CM Punk's return on Rampage.

You have to remember, this was at the time that the nWo had really become just hated and despised They weren't these uber cool dudes anymore, they had established themselves as really hated heels and did it very well. It was at the point that people were now pulling for WCW over the overwhelming odds of the nWo. And people were literally crying when Sting FINALLY showed his allegiance to WCW. Really good stuff.

I truly believe after going through it all again, that that moment when he dropped the bat was the high water mark for WCW. Not even Sting ultimately defeating Hogan at Starrcade was as monumental as that moment. The build that took almost a year, the uncertainty of Sting's loyalties, who was going to be the next nWo member... It was planned out and executed so well. Everything after that moment pales beside the two moments for WCW... 1) Scott Hall's appearance 2) Sting dropping the bat

You summed it up perfectly. Sting was so insanely over at that point. It was crazy. He was the Franchise of WCW and all of the storylines of him along with guys like DDP and Goldberg going against the NWO were absolutely fun to watch. Not to mention the great undercard they had with the cruiserweights which was always entertaining.

#2 biggest moment was probably Goldberg taking the belt off Hogan on Nitro. That crowd was bananas. It's the only time I can ever remember watching the replay immediately after to see the main event again.

That cruiserweight roster was and still is the best ever assembled in one company I believe.

It was in Atlanta, which was fitting. The Goldberg chant became iconic that night.

The finger poke of Doom, a few months later was the start of the fall. I remember checking out not long after that.
Yep, same. I still watched every night to the very end, but I was not nearly as invested after that.

Remembering That Time Scott Hall Was On The Jerry Springer Show Remembering That Time Scott Hall Was On The Jerry Springer Show | Fightful News

Wrestling related with the passing of Jerry Springer. Saw something related to this on my Facebook and figured I'd share it. Scott Hall was great either as Razor Ramon or playing himself in WCW. A really talented wrestler as well. I read this was the actual Intercontinental belt he gave him and not a replica. Thought that was pretty cool!

Loved Hall. I still believe he is the best wrestler of my generation to never win a singles World Championship. I think he would have made a great heel champ.
