The worst defense UT has ever had?

Worst I've ever seen.

During the last UT drive in the Mississippi State game, all I kept thinking about was that the offense was going to score too son and give Mississippi State the last possession. Even a minute was too much time to give them against our defense.

I would give damn near anything for a repeat of last year's defensive performance, as would Dooley. He likely is looking at 1 or 2 losses with a mediocre defense.

SC ran four vertical goes. Did not even try to hide it. We had one safety over the top. Then they could not stop the ball carrier. Execution was a bust and the scheme was a total failure. I was screaming timeout because I knew we were cooked. What a joke.

Unless you grab a shovel and start digging. We've been saying no where to go but up for three years but we just keep digging.

I absolutely agree. I don't claim to know football like John Madden, but I've watched enough games to recognize when a team is, or is not, well-coached. The 2012 Vols are not at all well-coached, most especially on D.

As I've said before, I wonder if Dooley supporters even watch Tennessee football games. If the did, surely they would see why UT has been thumped by FL, Bama, etc. When a team cannot tackle, blows coverage, lacks any ability to execute the fundamentals of football, well, yes, that team will always lose to well-coached teams.

There are to many soon to be great players on this D for it to be this bad . Could be the coaching .

We could also point out the kicking game which hasnt improved much in three years. We don't have a reliable XP kicker much less FG kicker and punting lol.

We're lucky to get the correct number of players on the field and lord help us we can't make a halftime adjustment so what are the chances the timeout would've helped us with this staff?

After the Troy game, we are:

112th in total defense with 483 ypg.
90th in rush defense with 186 ypg
115th in pass defense
And dead last in red zone defense with opposing offenses scoring a whooping 97% of the time. 20 of the 32 being TDs.

Forget worst UT defense of all time, I think we are in the running for the worst SEC defense in a long while.

Interesting question so I decided to check the all-time NCAA records for defensive ineptitude. Their answers, which can be found on pp. 17-18 ( http://fs.ncaa.org/Docs/stats/football_records/2012/fbs.pdf ) are as follows:

MOST YARDS ALLOWED PER GAME
553.0—Maryland, 1993 (6,083 in 11)

MOST POINTS ALLOWED
572—East Carolina, 2010 (13 games)

MOST POINTS ALLOWED PER GAME
50.3—La.-Lafayette, 1997 (553 in 11)

It is interesting to note that they do not provide a single-season breakdown of most yds. rushing or passing yielded.
