Looking at season 4, Scott Gimple's writing and them has been ingenious.
The there seems to be that the group is even more divided than ever before. You have the sick people quarantined. You have the young people quarantined in another cell block. You have the groups making the runs. You have the group staying at the prison, working to make jot run.
In the process of these divisions, Gimple is developing the characters and their motivations from each group. Carol has grown into a "do whatever is best for the group's surveil" type person. Rick and Carl's relationship is changing before our eyes. Daryl is becoming more of a group leader rather then the lone hunter. Even Michonne is getting comfortable in the group. Tyrese and Bob are still developing and both are looking like different types of threats to the groups as a whole.
Eventually, something is going to happen to stop the division and bring the various aspects of each character behavior back into the main group. Then we could see some real contrasts and challenges for leadership and direction of the group.
