The Vols Had A Ball (SI VAULT)1985

"the most dynamic college quarterback in the game since Joe Namath...with the best natural touch on the ball I've ever seen." Majors on Tony Robinson.'

Having witnessed his injury in person(Bama over agressiveness), I often wonder how far his talent would have taken him in college.

Tony Robinson's four touchdown passes and Tennessee's - 10.07.85 - SI Vault

I was one of those 94,000 plus who could hardly believe that the Vols were actually demolishing the Tigers in broad daylight. Bo Jackson was not only stopped, he was pummeled from the first time he carried the ball until he took himself out with his so-called "injury". That score doesn't even give a glimpse into how badly the Vols murdered them. The game was over before halftime and it was one of the greats Vol victories that I ever witnessed...I went to New Orleans for the Sugar Bowl that year [when everyone and I mean everyone kept pushing Miami for a national championship and the Vols were an afterthought] and saw Darryl Dickey and that great team carve up the Hurricanes as well. I'll never forget watching a replay of the game and hearing that senile Frank Broyles telling Keith Jackson, "The Tennessee team keeps throwing that short pass; the Hurricanes are going to pick one off and take it for a touchdown." He and Jackson never gave the Vols any credit and kept pushing the Canes until the game was over. That was the worst "homerism" that I've ever heard from television announcers [if you haven't, watch a tape and see]....However, the partying in NO that night and the next day was something to behold....Wow! what a year.....

I had heard a story told by Bill Anderson, in which Jackson made the remark, that he hoped UT could play well enough that ABC did not lose the TV audience. Anderson replied, not only would the audience stay tuned, but UT was gonna win the game.

The rest as they say is history.
A thumping from the word go.

Gotta love this line from the article -

"O.K., O.K., so Majors was a little tipsy with the intoxication of the moment"

I love looking through all of those old SI's in the Vault. Some of the ads are great, too.

I remember in that Auburn game, they came in with not only Bo, but another highly touted rb as well (I think it was Brent Fullwood). Yet the leading rusher at end of the game was a UT back -- I believe it was Keith Davis. Sweet.

i can't remember who it was, but i remember a story of someone asking keith jackson how much of a chance ut had of winning the game before kickoff, and jackson pretty much laughed in their face.

I was 10yo and sold cokes that season to see all the games. I remember it was the most $$ I made all season (around $42 very sticky dollars). Made most of my money by taking full trays up to the upper deck, selling the whole thing to a small group of drunk guys in the first row and watched them dump it all on the AU section (cups, ice and coke). As a 10yo it was pretty freaking funny.

I was there too. Great game. Bo didn't have many yards because he got knocked out. Left about midway and didn't come back if I remember right. T-Rob was a huge celebrity on campus, but short-lived. Pity. Great avatar Jacksonvol. Arguably the most important play of the 98 season.

Another story I've read about our Sugar Bowl win: Miami marched down the field on their 1st possession, with Testaverde throwing a TD pass to some guy named Michael Irvin. Broyles scribbled a note to Keith Jackson: 'Could be a blowout."
And it was.

Yeah if you watch the entire braodcast of that game EVERYBODY including the guy on the sideline was in Miami jock that game, Talking about how small Victor Peppers was and how UCLA victimized him and how Miami's 6'4 and 6'5 receivers would be able to catch at will against him and then as the game went on Peppers laid out one of the Miami receivers not sure which one and they barely threw to his side the rest of the game LOL...Jackson and Broyles were big time homers that game...Made that victory all the more satisfying.

Man I'll never forget that game! I was on my honeymoon in Lake Tahoe, believe it or not, and we watched the game at Caesars Palace!
I will never forget Jimmy Johnson being interviewed before the game and he said words to the effect of "After we beat TN, we should be ranked no.1" Oh the good old days!!
