Does Tennessee have any great players this year. Berry comes close. What about the rest of the guys. Here we thought Hefney was great last year in our eyes, and he may not make an NFL team. Foster has pretty good rushing numbers but having seen great Tennesee backs in the past, he's not even in the top ten. Other words, we can't rely on him to win the big games for us. An unproven quarterback who is struggling in practice. A new offensive coordinator, will his style of coaching work in the tough defensive SEC league, especially with unproven players. Our w/r are unproven. I am all Vol, but I have true concerns about this year, especially several other teams seem to have superstars. We can only hope.
This thread ticks me off. We could be in trouble, I thought we were in "trouble" after the UAT game last year...one pick six away from...you know. The good things about this year.
A great offensive line.
Proven running back and guys that that are on the up tick
New ideas about getting the ball in players hands
Special teams should be fine.
Secondary... better than we have had in a long time
Line Backers... thin, but their is a plan.
D Line...... good players, but unit needs some help
QB unproven, but he has one of the best O lines in the SEC, and guys that can run
the ball. This should take some pressure off him. I think that we will see a lot of
second downs and less than 6 for a first
This is the key...other than the D. The guys playing WR are sooo much better than
anyone thinks... The fact that we will be able to get the ball in their hands with the
good blocking at the line of scrimmage, coupled with an O line that could be GREAT
should give all VOL fans something to get excited about.
I agree. The level of talent, the coaches right now are off the charts. If you win a title in this league you earn it.There is no doubt in my mind that you guys have the talent to win the East. Of course whether or not you will remains to be seen. I honestly believe you guys will finish somwhere between 11-1 and 9-3 depending on how well your defense and special teams play, turnover ratio, and luck. In many cases the team coming out of the East, or West for that matter, has definately benefited from a little bit of the latter as we did last year and Florida the year before.
This league is just too damn tough!!
1. Crompton was the number 2 Prostyle QB out of HS, has exprience, but has yet to show he is capable of winning games.
2. Arian Foster should have a good year running the ball. We've installed the FB back into the system which should help him a lot. He's also a threat to catch the ball out of the backfield.
3. OL is hyped but most is because of the short routes and Ainge's inability to stand in the pocket longer than 2 seconds. Still haven't proven they can effectively run block against the major programs of the SEC.(Except UGA)
4. TE is a position where we can be one of the tops in the SEC and NCAA or be almost non existent. "If" Warren wins his appeal it will help out tremendously. If Cottam can get healthy that will be a plus as well. Stocker had a good spring, and from reports has really came on and worked hard in the weight room to get stronger and ready for SEC play this season. Douglas is a true frosh, but will make an impact when he's ready to go.
5. WR, one of our deepest positions on the team. Our top three receivers from last year return combining for 185 reception and 2,181 yards. Add 15 TD's to that and the young talent on the team and we are in good shape there.
6. The starting DL should be a big step up from last year stopping the run and rushing the passer. The backups at DE are young and talented, just need a little experience. Behind the starting DT's you have Walter Fisher, who could play as a starter if an injury occurs, and Langley, Thomas, and Mathis who are fighting for the 4th and 5th spots in the rotation. All have been pretty decent during preseason workouts so far.
7. The LB unit could be great. Whoever starts at SLB will be good. Nevin McKenzie and Adam Myers-White are both converted safeties with speed and strength to produce great numbers. Rico has his side locked down. MLB is probably our deepest as of right now. Ellix Wilson, Nick Reveiz, Gerald Williams, and Chris Donald will all play this spot sometime during the year. The backups have experience, and from what I've been hearing Rod Wilks could be the next Lawrence Taylor.
8. Our secondary is probably deeper than our WR position. Eric Berry, Demetrice Morley, DeAngelo Willingham, Brent Vinson, Dennis Rogan, Marsalous Johnson, and Antonio Gaines have all played meaningful time. 6 have started at some point in the career at UT. This will be our strongest group. The only real need is depth behind the S positions.
9. If Cunningham can be consistent through the first 5 games of the year, him and Lincoln will be just fine. The only real need here is coverage on kicks, and someone who can kick it past the 10 with good hangtime on kickoffs.
There isn't a lot to worry about right now. We just need to get through preseason practice without any injuries and play to our abilities.
