playing defense like men and not girls or they'll be out in the second round. When you're giving up 40-45 points to sc, arky and others, you've got problems. They're soft--and that doesn't cut it. This is generally the problem with "high-scoring offenses"--you can't ever put anybody away because you're giving up easy baskets on the other end, which is exactly the way UT plays. Either that or the whistle is blowing.

I think our defense will definitely look better in the tourney for three reasons:

1. The press will be more effective than it has been in the SEC. SEC teams have seen our press for the last three years and now have ways to break it. Other than against Louisville we should be able to create more TOs in the tourney.

2. SEC refs. Hopefully the refs in the tourney will let the guys play a little bit more which will help hide our lack of defensive movement and discipline.

3. Motivation. Losing in the SEC semis and getting screwed by the committee will help intensify our defensive effort. At least for a few games.

As long as Teddy Valentine's not there we'll be good. It's funny, because if you talk to other referees, not even the other refs like Teddy.

I'm going to say a four letter word. ZONE. Why not play some zone. Our man to man has struggled and we have been exposed inside playing man.

A zone leaves the perimeter players more open. Playing teams like Butler or South Alabama, that won't fly.

Im not going to try to say tennessee is a great defensive team. Yet alot of the lack of credit for the vols on the defensive end comes from their style of play. When you look at some teams that score in the 70's against us and then score in the 50's against ky or vandy its mainly because of our uptempo shooting early in the shotclock play and obviously this gives the other teams more shots than they would get against a kentucky team that throws up a shot when the shot clock has winded down to 1.

I disagree, there is no way opponents can get any more wide open than they were in the Arkansas game. After about the 5th three pointer, I was sure that we were going to play tighter defense and quit getting caught up in traffic and screens but it didn't seem to bother us that they couldn't miss from behind the arc. I say try the zone and see if it works.

Total points scored is not a good way to determine how good our defense is. Points per possession and FG% are much better indicators because of the pace we play at. But lately even those numbers have been bad. We have played capable defense most of the season. We need to find it again, and before the second round game hopefully.

I think that the Arky loss, combined with the perceived slight on seeding will be enough to motivate us to good defense. We CAN play good defense; we just haven't been. The fact that we are capable makes me comfortable because I'm sure Bruce will figure out a way to fix the problems we've had. We certainly don't need to focus too much on the offense right now.
