I don't want to throw out a knee jerk post. The right decision was made today. It is sad to see someone who wanted to go out on his terms, but never got the train back on the tracks after 2001.

Something that I do find problematic is the easy target of attacking the media. Fulmer sullied the emotion of the moment by being petty toward the reporters in the room, ignoring one while he was asking a question, and naming the people he would answer questions from. The relationship between the media has been tenuous all year (and in previous years). Many of the comments that have come from the team and from the H.C. have evidenced a hostility toward the media and indirectly toward the fans that has become part of the culture of the team. Today's outbursts by the players is evidence of an attitude that comes from the top down. The media didn't "start this B.S.," and it is denial of some basic facts to try and pin it on them.

Have to find someone to blame for the 3-6 results. Guess it was John Adams running practice.

This is one of the best posts that I have read today. Nice.

I agree and have posted simular comments on other threads (see MH Letter thread)

Agreed 100%.

The "us against the world" mentality isn't bad until it includes the fans cheering for you and the athletic director.

I agree completely. The media didn't create this situation, constantly being embarassed by rivals and underachieving created it.

Somebody called in the KNS show today and asked John Adams how he felt about getting the coach fired?

People are idiots. Some people I wonder how they actually meet someone who is stupid enough to let them have offspring with them.

Were you at the presser, Justin? Were there some former players (thye mentioned Inky) there as well?

I agree about CPF turning a cold shoulder to some of the media.....but it was his time to vent. Though, I didn't like how the players were so rude to the media. They started running their mouths when asked to make room for the reporters.

Wow. Let's be nice to the media. This was Fulmer being forced out after 37 years of dedication to the University and he was still nicer to the media than many HC's are.

So he was a little testy. Understandable no? I can't believe this line of criticism given what was going on.

The reason the players are upset is because they know a new coach will come in and insist on discipline and respect, something this team has lacked in years.

I will have to agreee. The lack of discipline is one of the reasons this team has only won 3 games.

It's not so much that he was being testy. It is about the insular nature of the program over the last few years. Us against the world is fine, as long as the fans are part of the "us," and as long as "us against the world" doesn't just mean settling for less than your best. Closed practices, players and head coach saying fans don't know what they are talking about, players swatting at cameras, players cussing during a nationally televised press conference. When you are underperforming, I just have a problem with blaming fans and the media that is often just being honest about fan sentiment. I was ready to go to the last 3 games and give the guy a good send off. To be honest, the team acting like a bunch of punks kind of sours me to that. To be honest, I was kind of surprised to see Eric Berry participating in it all. He seems to be one of the few players who was never content to settle for mediocrity and just point fingers elsewhere. When you have players goofing off on the sidelines during a beatdown by your biggest rival, I have a hard time believing that their solemn faces today are anything more than sadness at losing the den mother that lets them run loose for so many years.

The crap was just more of the same we've been seeing for years. Thank goodness it's about to change.

I understand your saying that, but did these guys come to UT to be losers and embarrassed every Saturday. I hope not. My sons H.S. team changed coaches this year and the new coach was able to draw a line in the sand, start fresh and the kids responded to it and they are in the playoffs. Discipline is the major reason we are so terrible this year and many years since 2001.

Dont know why he was so rude to the media? The biggest majority of them have supported him for years. Its a wonder they didnt let Kesling, Priest, and Wilkerson ask all the questions.

the players are upset because they know that they, too, are to blame for our malaise. They're being told, correctly, that they either suck or are massive underachievers.

Chattanooga Times Free Press | UT Blog: Surreal day in Knoxville as Fulmer announces decision to step down

The TFP's Wes Rucker didn't seem to think Fulmer was rude yesterday. This add at least some perspective to the scene.

Well, that depends on if you consider ignoring a question being asked and pointing to someone else rude. He was curt at best. Hooker said this morning that he though that the whole scene was frightfully close to becoming physical between the players and the media.

it's the Knoxville media so it's nothing to lose sleep over. Without Fulmer giving them their stories to write the KNS sports page would be box scores and strip clup ads
