The VN Interview with Phil Martelli

Interesting. I would've thought it might water down the turnover ratio...
It would depend on what kind of zone they play. If they just stand back in a 2-3 and dare people to shoot over it, they won't cause many turnovers. However, if you attack and trap the corners, you might generate a comparable number of errors.

I was referring to the place in that SI article where the author talks about how Bruce and Summit sat down together to go over how she runs the matchup zone. It said he wanted to use it when the 3 line gets drawn back...

The matchup won't cause many turnovers. It's purpose is to keep the ball on the perimeter and make the other team shoot over it, not try and take the ball away. Think John Chaney's Temple teams or John Beilein's West Virginia squads.

the true strengths of the matchup is that it makes set plays very difficult to run and the personnel matchups constantly change.

Best example of great zone defense I can remember is when Utah made that run in the late 90s (98?) and Majerus put his slower, taller, lankier guys on the perimeter to guard Arizona's shooters (Simon, Bibby in particular). Those guys couldn't get as good looks, they couldn't whip the ball around the perimeter as quickly or go inside-out b/c lanes were blocked, and as a result they missed a bunch of contested 3s from long distance. Brilliant move on Majerus' part.

Of course they lost to UK in the finals, but they performed admirably to get there.
