We did appear to be pretty vanilla. I agree this does not make sense, seeing that we have a lot of film already on hand for other coaches to dissect.

Unless...

There is one or more fairly radical philosophy changes on hand gong forward, and the staff doesn't want to tip that hand too soon. Maybe more I-formation? Maybe they have seen improvement in Dobbs' passing and the WR play, so they plan to use a lot more passing, and new passing concepts this year?

As an aside: Why was our center play so putrid? It looks to me, with solid center play on O, 80% of our problems go away.

the offense is just vanilla period. the coaches do not adapt philosophy based on the athletes, they try to mold the athletes into the philosophy. = bad coaching

We've pretty much seen the same offense since Dobbs took over. We run on 1st and 2nd, almost exclusively, and pass on 3rd in long situations. If teams can't stop the run, we eat them up. If we get to 3rd and long then we still have the option of Dobbs' legs to hopefully get the 1st down. Sutff the run, and we virtually have no offensive power. Nothing so far makes me believe that we will be a passing threat this year either. Which is why us being at preseason 9th in the country, even with the returning talent, kind of ridiculous when you think about it.

I can agree with 'vanilla offense' argument if we were leading even by a TD. We were trailing in the game, going 3 and outs. If not for Sutton's timely INT we would be 0-1. If indeed we went in with the 'vanilla offense' plan, why didn't we make adjustments at the half being down 13-3 ?
This coaching staff sucks at making any in-game adjustments. They have in the past (OU, FL, BAMA, ARKY and even USCjr last year) and continue to do so !!

Center Coleman Thomas was playing with an ankle injury...

I posted this last year -- it is time to bring it back.

Run/run/pass Run/run/pass Run/run/pass Run/run/pass Run/run/pass Run/run/pass
" " "
" " "

Hurd carrying it over 50% of the plays on first down - causes me concern that my sarcastic thread isn't specific enough - since not only are they running it every first down they are giving it to the same back every time.

CBJ has said he doesn't make in-game adjustments. The coaches stick with the gameplan. Shoop may not do that, but DeBord does.

That makes me feel better to an extent.

Anyone know how bad, and how long to recover? Do we not have any depth at all there? I mean, I empathise with injury and respect the heck out of him for playing through it, but would also like to think he wouldn't need to against ASU.

I agree. I don't see the offense changing dramatically from the past. The thing is, we don't need our QB to be anything but a threat to run the ball...he doesn't have to be a weapon, per se. This offense would be a lot more effective and harder to stop if the QB could make throws all over the field and athletic enough to make the ocassional 6-8 yd carry to keep the ends honest. I think Dobbs is a quality athlete, but not the right QB for this offense. Jmo..

Thomas has a high ankle sprain. He really shouldn't have been playing. Not sure why they seem so intent on RSing JJones. We're going to need him, so why not get him in the rotation?

I will admit that I look forward to seeing this offense run with both/either of the backups, who I think will be better passing threats. I just don't know that I want to see that this year.

Perfect world: UT plays out with Dobbs with big leads. Dormady gets quality time that prepares him to take over next year. G redshirts and gets quality time next year during every game, since we'll be so unstoppable with Dormady.

I'd like to see more passing on 2nd down, particularly 2nd and short. I understand wanting to get positive yards on 1st down and going run heavy on that down.

Also - how about dialing up some pass plays designed to move the pocket? Dobbs seems to be such a better passer (and better QB generally speaking) when he is moving and using his athletic ability. He never has looked comfortable being stationary in the pocket and trying to read a defense.

Neither Backup is ready to run this offense, especially if our O-Line plays that bad again. Don't sleep on Guarantano winning the job next year. Everything I have heard is that he is the real deal and pushing Dormady hard, But it is early to have that debate. But my money is on Guarantano to be the starter next year as a Redshirt Freshman.

CT had aa leg injury. (I think).

Travis Stephens said that offensive plays are added in on a game by game basis. It is our HOPE that the plan was intentionally "sandbagged".

If so, are we saving the unveiling for VT or UF?

I'm hoping that NG was just that good. But he was making our center look horrible. We know he doesn't do well against speed rushers (see Oklahoma), but we've got to have more than that from him

I look forward to it to. I really think that it will be hard to beat the really good defenses without a steady threat to stretch the field and make all the throws. Maybe Dobbs and DeBord surprise us this week. We will probably have some definitive answers after this weekend..

The offensive line couldn't protect Dobbs against App St. If it doesn't markedly improve, the less mobile Dormady would fare much worse than even Dobbs does, IMO.

Well then, they need to wrap that ankle in a Coomfrey compress and pray. Thursday was horrible and we'll struggle until that interior plays well.

Dobbs did not have a bad game considering he was under SO MUCH duress all night. I truly believe that if that NT hadn't been swishing by Thomas all night, our O would have been a nightmare for the ASU instead of for us UT fans. That single disruption put the whole offense on its heels all night.

It shut down a lot of middle-run production, which had us running the edge a lot. It shut down any chance of a long passing game because there was no time to allow the routes to develop. What does that give us/them? They sit on the short edge and close it off.

All we had was edge runs and screens that they were sitting on all night. We were lucky to gut out a win and, again, I'd say it was 80% center play.

OK... So, show of hands... Who missed the bold? :)

JRL... I'm not overly invested in one backup over another. But admit it, if it worked out like I wrote, it would be an awesome year.

That makes no since for any coach to "not make adjustments" when their game plan is not working!

Shoops on the other hand, is like any other elite Defensive Coordinator...I'm sure he make adjustments on the fly!
