Is getting a solid staff together.

It may be more important in football, but I'd think Bball is just as important too.

The bigger the name and longer you've been in the game has a major upside for getting a credible staff together.

Pitino Jr? has the best resource when in comes to creating a staff IMO.

Tyndall? Maybe he grabs a MTSU guy and brings the rest of his staff.

White? His dad is the AD for DUKE. He'll have resources too, but I'm not sure if his dad has a good insight on whom to hire.

Why in the world is this guy ignored?????
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - - For the third time in the last four years, Belmont University men's basketball head coach Rick Byrd has been named finalist for the Hugh Durham National Coach of the Year Award, CollegeInsider.com announced this week. Byrd, who ranks eighth among all NCAA Division I head coaches in career wins with 689, led the Bruins to a fifth consecutive conference regular season championship and a ninth postseason appearance in the last 11 years. The Bruins earned two victories in the Postseason NIT to reach the quarterfinal round.
Belmont also notched victories over North Carolina, Indiana State, Middle Tennessee and Green Bay, among others, en route to a 26-10 record - the program's fourth consecutive season of 26-plus victories. Tell me why a Knoxville hometowner and UT grad is not at the top of the list! You'd think he was a convicted felon or something! Instead he is one of the most prestigious college coaches in the country!

Maybe Hart is looking for someone younger. I was friends with Rick in elementary school, and I would love to see him get a shot at the job, but he's 60 years old, and might be too firmly rooted in middle Tennessee now.

Everyone tried telling you he wasn't a serious candidate
Dave Hart quotes
" I am looking for somebody who is a winner. Somebody who has won where they have been. You just don't know until you conclude the process what you are going to be looking at in terms of your priorities and who rose up. You know, you could be sitting in front of somebody that maybe is not the number one target but they come across as so impressive that you just know, that this is the person. You have heard me talk about it. I think fit is important, I have always felt that in my entire career. I think fit is critically important and we will look for someone who we deem to be very good fit."
"I don't know that in terms of the geography would be critically important. I think anytime you're in the search process, knowledge of not only the game you're coaching, the knowledge of the environment, the conference, what's going on nationally is always important."

Success at LA Tech >>>>>>>>>>> Belmont

If at 60 he hasn't broken through to a bigger job, that's because he's not that good.
Besides who wants a guy who will see UT as a retirement gig?

I'd take Saban today retirement tour or not. i don't think Byrd will leave at this point. He makes good money, is winning and is tightly dug into the community. Won't get into the Nashville vs Knoxville thing.

also, Dooley had success at LA Tech. No thanks.

La Tech's/ Michael White. I just believe he will be the next basketball coach at Tennessee.
Since his dad is the athletic director at Duke, would you not think his recruiting prowess is due to Duke rejects? Not to mention the fact that he is probably in training for Krzyzewski's job in a few years when he retires. Translation - bigger risk than Cuonzo Martin was.

Think about how irrational it is to be afraid to hire a guy because you fear that he'll win a lot and be an attractive candidate for one of the premier jobs in basketball in 5-7 years. It's like not wanting a good looking wife.

Can anyone name a "big splash" hire in the SEC in the past 20 years other than Pitino and Calipari? Just about everyone goes the "up and comer" route.

His dad hasn't been at Duke for that long. Maybe at most 2 years??

He's a young guy that knows how to negotiate. It's in his blood. Also, you will ALWAYS be a better recruiter when you are closer in age.

Our biggest risk hiring him will be his "buy-out" if we have to fire him.

This just isn't true. Byrd's an outstanding coach and an ever better guy. He has his reasons for staying at a smaller school like Bemont.....but I can assure you it's not because he's not good enough to coach at a place like UT. I don't know if UT will target him, but he'd win big if he was our next coach.

Dooley had success at La Tech?.... 17-20, 2 losing seasons in 3 years, finished 4th, 2nd and 5th in the WAC..... I don't call this success and it has absolutely nothing to do with White's actual success there as a basketball coach

Vol fan logic: let's not hire a coach because he "might" leave for Duke one day. Let's settle with a coach that no teams will try to take from us

Vol fan logic: We shouldn't hire a coach from La Tech since we already hired one (from a different sport) that had a losing record there already, because the basketball coach is similar

What sucks about the posibilty of us hiring White, is that our fans are idiots and won't get behind him. They think that we are some huge power house that can go steal a Shaka Smart or two guys that are at their alma mater's. Or a guy that our previous AD passed on twice, so I'm sure he is just antsy to go for another UT interview for the 3rd time. Our fans need to except the fact that we are a power house in basketball so we have to get an up and comer. Guess what Pearl was.

(1) His age! (2) He is not exciting and won't bring energy to the program.

He is the safest bet though. He would win on Rocky Top!!! No doudt!!!!
