It doesn't matter if you know people or not. It's the same dynamic that makes walking down the street in New York a head down experience while walking down the street in Atlanta is a constant "Hey, hoya doin, hey, hi, hello, hey, nod, nod, hey, hello . . . . "

Living in Raleigh, which has a high percentage of New England types, you would walk past a women in the mall and she wouldn't make eye contact and have one hand in her purse, probably on a can of mace.

It's wonderful to walk in mall in Atlanta, where the majority of the women will look you in the eye, smile, and say hi. It took a bit to get reacclimated because I kept looking over my shoulder to see who they were speaking to. I love the South that still has a high percentage of Southerners.
