The Truth Hurts

That is correct. It is the only major NCAA sport that the national champion is not determined by a playoff. I love college football but have no love for the bowls. D2 can do it so should D1-the only difference is greed.

I doubt that's the only reason. But you seem to have your belief pretty firmly set so I won't argue with you.

I for one could care less what bowl we play in. And until we have a playoff system I don't acknowledge any D1 football championships. What a bowl game means to me as a fan is an opportunity to see the Vols play one more time and get six more weeks of practice. So whatever we play in, the Breakfast Burrito Bowl or the Chips and Dip Bowl, I dont care as long as we go to A bowl.

So you don't aknowledge Tennessee's championship in 1998?

When I read that I laughed because some people out side of the Tennessee family call that an "ill gotten" National Championship because Marcus Outzen was the QB for FSU. You know Marcus Outzen, up until the game, the reason they were going to win because he was more mobile, but as soon as the games over it was the reason they lost and therefore Tennessee's 13-0 National Championship is ill gotten.

Anyway thats my flashback of the day....resume with the discussion.

Isn't that the name of Oregon's stadium? Outzen that is...........

All this doom and gloom is really starting get to the glass is half full crowd. Aren't we 11 1/2 months removed from the forgetable 5 and 6. Sure this team has lost the last two but come on they've competed every week with the exception of Arky.

Someone explain to me how going 5 and 6 to 9 and 3 is a sign of decline.

You're right. The Vols had a lead in the fourth quarter against Florida and LSU. Should be 9-1 right now but if ifs and buts were candy and nuts we would all have a merry Christmas. But it sure as hell beats 5-6!

I dont think anyone saying it's a decline from last year but there seeing a decline in Tennessee Football as a whole. Lack of recruiting, player development (etc..) to get us back on top of the SEC.

Basically in my mind this year we've showed we can get past the middle teams (SC, Alabama)(isn't that expected???, sure is for me) but there is still work to be done to beat the top teams. The football we're playing this year is not Tennessee Football. Tennessee Football is not allowing 100 yards rushing, and rushing for over 100 yards. We are doing the opposite.

You can say what you want about this new an improved passing O, but until we get back to those basics of owning the trenches Tennessee will not be back in the SEC championship game.

we competed every week? Bro, we were pushed all over the field by LSU and UF. Did anybody really think we were going to stop LSU at the end? the fact that we had a losing season, despite our resources, our tradition, our fan base, is very telling, the fact that we got run out of fayeteville should open your eyes

Yes, being pounded into sand by the mighty Razorbacks was awfully hard to take. I have a suspicion that LSU and UF will dismantle Arky and then people will no longer be able to hide behind the illusion that Arky is a BCS contender when justifying that horror show.

Just because some of us don't see eye to eye with you and your buddy Climer doesn't mean we can't read. Also, most of us realize that things aren't up to par, we just don't see the need to post a new thread(plagarized or not) every 15 minutes. Wanna buy a dead horse?

what do you expect me to talk about?? we're in the middle of another crap season......maybe we should be putting up new posts about how great it is to be in contention for the SEC Champ...oh wait....we cant do that because we're not....maybe there should be some new posts about which BCS bowl we're going to....oh wait again...cant do that because we're not going to a BCS bowl....let's put up some new threads about the glorious return to the top ten....wrong again, you can deride me as much as you desire, but it wont change the fact that we are on our way down

Also could have easily lost to Bama, AF, and So. Carolina and been 4-6 now! So don't use that logic. Our record is what it is.........improved from 2005 but not what we, that are old enough to remember Fulmer's early years, want.

I knew it would happen after going 5-6 last year; our expectations have been lowered so much that some of you will be celebrating late in the night with a Peach Bowl bid!!!:cray: :focus: :mamba:

If you consider this a crap season then maybe you need to find another team to follow, because history says your gonna be disappointed more than not.

Why follow a team that doesn't bring you any joy?

All this fuss. Let's check reality here. Last Year 5-6, this year 7-3 so far. I'd call that progress. We had chances to beat Florida and LSU, both more talented teams. We've lost our starting QB, two of our best defensive players, running game non productive, which explains the ARKY blowout. I have confidence based on what Chavis has done in the past, that the Defense will get better. I have confidence based on what Cutcliff has done in the past, that our Offense will get better. I have confidence based on what Fulmer has done in the past, that our Recruiting will get better. Sure 9-3 is a bit disappointing. But how many of you honestly thought UT would go undefeated this year? UT has been a sinking boat the past few years. But Fulmer has plugged the holes and it will take a little time to get the water out and the ship upright.

We're not 9-3 yet. We're 7-3 and facing Vandy and Kentucky squads that are very motivated to beat us.

I do think we'll win both however.

I don't think the Chicken Bowl can take UGA over us if Tech beats them (and we win out) -- the way the rules are now, I think GA has to be within one loss of us for them to be picked over us. If we win out and UGA loses to Tech, we won't do any worse than the Chicken Bowl.

But if UGA beats Tech, then who knows -- especially if Auburn and LSU (or both) end up with three losses. We don't seem to have the popularity with bowl selection committees that we used to, unfortunately.

The Outback took a 8-4 Florida over a 10-2 Tennessee in 2003?

This is exactly what I suspected the Fulmerites would turn to if things did not really turn around this year. Now we are supposed to base all our expectations for this season on what happened last year. What about 2004 and beyond? CPF said himself that last year was the "perfect storm". Unless you people are going to say that from here on out every season will be a "perfect storm" for UT then you have to judge this season based on the trends of UT football over the past few years. Right now the trend towards mediocrity is not being broken. Beat VU and UK by 20+ each and win a convincing victory against a quality opponenet in bowl game and maybe I'll believe that there is some positive progress being made to carry into next year.

Remember, the Vols have not played in a BCS bowl since '99 and probably are one loss away from fulfilling the Music City Bowl's wildest dreams. UT fans used to look down their noses at the Chick-fil-A Bowl. Now a trip to Atlanta never looked so good.

I have yet to understand proclaimed "Vol Fans" smack talking their own team.

Almost there against Vandy.
